Aluminum Association reports North American (US & Canada) downstream market updates for the month of January 2015.

New can stock (class) scrap receipts totaled 57.3 million pounds during January 2015, a decrease of 4.4 percent from the January 2014 total of 59.9 million pounds. Compared to the previous month, class scrap receipts declined 1.5 percent from the December 2014 total of 58.1 million pounds. Preliminary class scrap receipts for 2014 totaled 702.4 million pounds, off 4.8 percent from the 2013 total of 737.6 million pounds.

Estimated shipments of Aluminum Forgings and Impacts by U.S. and Canadian producers totaled 27.1 million pounds during January 2015, an increase of 12.0 percent over the January 2014 total of 24.2 million pounds. Compared to the previous month, shipments declined 3.4 percent from the December 2014 total of 28.1 million pounds. Preliminary shipments for 2014 totaled 333.3 million pounds, up 13.1 percent over the 2013 total of 294.8 million pounds.

Shipments of Aluminum Extruded Products (extruded shapes, pipe & tube, and rod & bar) by U.S. and Canadian producers totaled an estimated 390.8 million pounds during January 2015, a rise of 8.1 percent over the January 2014 total of 361.6 million pounds. Compared to the previous month, shipments increased 24.5 percent over the December 2014 revised total of 314.0 million pounds. Revised shipments for 2014 totaled 4,532.4 million pounds, up 8.3 percent over the 2013 total of 4,184.5 million pounds.
