Aluminium  is the second-most used material in modern vehicles today and a key component that can improve vehicle fuel economy safely and affordably. The Association takes interest in the vehicle fuel economy and emissions regulations issues and is keen on playing their part.

Commenting on the topic, Heidi Brock, president and CEO of the Aluminum Association said, “Our members continue to see strong growth in the use of aluminum in cars and trucks as our customers increasingly see mass reduction as the best strategy to build the fleet of the future,”. “Lighter, stronger vehicles create value for the customer in addition to savings at the pump, including improved performance and increased safety,” she added.

The Association has suggested that the following for the review:

1.Take up a fact-based, data-driven approach for decision-making.
2.Encourage competition and innovation by increasing use of advanced technologies, like aluminum and other high-strength, low-weight materials in order to create a win-win situation for consumers and carmakers consumers.
3.Since, vehicle size is proven to be a more important safety determinant than weight. Any revised rule should maintain the current call for mass reduction instead of downsizing, considering the benefits to consumers and the nation.

As seen by the Association, the use of aluminium in automobiles would continue strong growth in coming years. U.S. aluminium industry is vital to the nation’s domestic manufacturing base, committing about $2.8 billion investment in U.S. plant expansions since 2013, creating American jobs and strengthening the U.S. economy.
