The Aluminum Association has released its preliminary estimates in the monthly Aluminum Situation report, stating that aluminium demand in North America (US and Canada) has recorded a 6.3% year-to-date growth through the third quarter of 2022 ended September 30.

Growth in the third quarter has continued to reflect robust demand compared to the first and second quarters.
Charles Johnson, president & CEO of the Aluminum Association, commented: “We are glad to see steady demand growth for North American aluminum, which is some of the cleanest aluminum in the world. As we strive for a more energy-efficient future, our metal continues to provide innovative solutions and competitive advantages for businesses and consumers.”
The Aluminum Association has mentioned explicitly in the report that aluminium demand in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers and imports) totalled approximately 21.0 billion pounds through Q3 2022, reflecting an improvement of 6.3 per cent Y-o-Y.
A similar demand level was last seen in 2018 and 2019 at 21.1 billion pounds and 21.2 billion pounds, after which two successive months saw a decline to 17.8 billion pounds and 19.8 billion pounds.
Particularly in the third quarter of 2022, aluminium demand was 7.0 billion pounds – 2.1 per cent less than Q2 2022 but 7.0 per cent higher than Q3 2021.
The Aluminum Association report also shows that flat-rolled products (sheet, plate, and foil) demand climbed 8.4 per cent year-to-date through September. Exports of semi-fabricated aluminium products increased 17.7 per cent YTD.
Aluminium has become a metal of choice in North America, given sustainability a top priority. The carbon impact of aluminium production in North America has declined by 60 per cent since 1991, and also enables lower carbon outcome for the end-use products like automotive, building, and packaging.
