The bankrupt Hannibal, Ohio-based aluminium producer is seeking court approval to sell the calcined metallurgical-grade alumina, valued at $263.75 per tonne, from its Burnside refinery to Switzerland-based Glencore, according to court documents dated November 14 and filed in the US bankruptcy court in Delaware. China’s alumina imports rose in October due to aluminum smelters stockpiling raw materials for winter production and falling imported alumina prices, Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) has learned. Inbound shipments of alumina grew 25% from a year ago to 460,000 tonnes in October. This is because aluminum smelters began to build up stocks in September in preparation for production in winter. In addition, lower imported alumina prices also enticed aluminum smelters to step up imports. Imports from January through October, however, fell 28% year-on-year to 2.94 million tonnes. Alumina exports fell 6.6% year-on-year in October as a result of a reduction in volumes sent to Canada and Norway. Exports totalled 685,214 tonnes, compared with 733,885 tonnes in October 2012. Revenues for the month stood at $170.41 million, down from $190.35 million a year ago. Canada reduced its volumes to 157,952 tonnes, compared with 302,077 tonnes a year earlier. Norway acquired 103,095 tonnes, reporting a decrease from 191,257 tonnes in October 2012. By contrast, Bahrain imported 50,470 tonnes in October 2013, from no trade in the same month last year. In the January-September period of 2013, alumina exports totalled 5.84 million tonnes, down 5.7% on the year.

China’s bauxite imports are expected to remain stable but a future raw material for alumina could be coal ash, according to Sandy Kong, senior analyst at BGRIMM said. “Coal ash is forecast to be an important raw material in the future. Four tonnes of coal generates one tonne of coal ash,” she told delegates at the 3rd Asian bauxite and alumina conference in Singapore. About 2.4 tonnes of coal ash is needed to make one tonne of alumina and the energy consumed is about 1.35 tonnes of standard coal, Kong said. “The energy cost is relatively higher [in alumina produced using coal ash] and we need to try to reduce the energy cost,” she said.
