Alumina Limited has broken a three-year dividend drought after posting a slightly better than expected underlying profit of $US91.1 million ($117 million). Shareholders in the company, which operates a joint venture with American aluminium giant Alcoa, have not been rewarded for their patience since February 2012. However, on Thursday, they were given a US1.6¢ dividend per share. The dividend was below the US2¢ dividend that analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had expected, and well below the US4¢ dividend predicted by JPMorgan. Vietnam's alumina output will jump this year as a processing plant will become operational later in the year while the Tan Rai complex, the country's only operational facility, will raise output by 11 percent, the Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper reported, citing the investor of the projects. A bushfire is hampering mining operations for BHP Billiton and Newmont Mining at two sites south of Perth. The mining giants are closely monitoring an out of control bushfire which has burned more than 30,000 hectares in the south west of Western Australia. A house has been destroyed and about 50 firefighters are creating containment lines. The Chinese market for alumina remains slow as the trading remained lukewarm with expectations of better demand in the coming weeks. The domestic spot prices for alumina hovered around 2,650-2,730 yuan per tonne as on Friday January 23, while the three-month aluminium contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange dipped by 5 yuan per tonne from last week ending at 12,935 yuan per tonne. Chalco did try to start a campaign along with other players in the industry to boost prices, not many are hopeful about the success of the campaign as the downstream buyers are not interested in buying raw materials.
