One of two ball mills at Hydro’s bauxite mining operations, Paragominas in Para, Brazil, was taken out for planned maintenance in the beginning of March, with planned return to production towards the second half of March. As work progressed, an inspection revealed items which require an extended period of reduced production. Maintenance and improvements are now expected to last until the second half of April. Paragominas normally operates with two ball mills, and with one ball mill out for maintenance, production at Paragominas is now running at 50% of capacity. A part of the bauxite required for the Rio Tinto Alcan’s Yarwun site will come from Gove said the acting general manager Greg Bacon. The plant requires seven million tonnes of bauxite at present and six million of it comes from the Weipa site owned by Rio, only one million is being sourced from Gove bauxite site. Rio Tinto has also started dealing in alumina hydrate this year which is used in fertilizers, paints, inks and glass manufacturing. China’s alumina imports fell 40% on monthly and yearly basis to 385,194 tonnes in January 2015, customs data showed. Imported material being less attractive is the main reason for lower inbound shipments. Domestic prices fell due to growing production, while FOB price of Australian alumina stayed above $350/tonne. Alcoa's Australian assets have faced higher energy costs since the carbon tax was repealed, in revelations that challenge one of the primary criticisms of the controversial scheme. The higher energy costs were revealed on Thursday by Alcoa's local joint venture partner, Alumina Limited, which said its energy costs had risen in the six months since the carbon tax was repealed, once currency fluctuations were put aside.
