Emirates Global Aluminium has sent 13 female UAE National engineers to Ma’aden’s alumina refinery in Saudi Arabia as part of preparation work for the start-up of its Al Taweelah alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi. The new group are the first women to participate in the programme. Eleven of the women are graduate trainees who will fill mechanical and process engineering roles in the new alumina refinery. Mytilineos, a Greece-based industrial group, will soon become Europe’s biggest alumina producer after finalizing a $400 million alumina investment at a meeting on December 22. The company is expected to start construction of new alumina refinery in 2018. For the ten months from January to October 2017, imports were up at 2.51 million tonnes, according to the latest import-export data published by China General Customs. In October, Australia and Vietnam were the top exporters of alumina to China. Australia and Vietnam exported 94,877 tonnes and 80,650 tonnes of alumina respectively. Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company (JISCO) exported 35,000 tonnes of alumina from the Alpart Refinery for the first time on Thursday, November 23. The cargo is estimated to arrive in China by the end of the year. The company will spend around US$3 billion over a period of three years for upgrading the 1.65-million tonnes per annum plant which it opened in June this year. They are planning to construct a second alumina plant with a capacity of 2 million tonnes per year.
