In August 2021, the alumina production in China came in at 6.39 million tonnes after increasing by 1.58 per cent month-on-month from 6.29 million tonnes, founded the Shanghai Metals Market. According to the SMM data, the output for August was 6.16 million tonnes of metallurgical grade alumina compared to 6.08 million tonnes in July.

The average daily output of metallurgical grade alumina in August was 197,000 tonnes, up by 1.24 per cent from July and 6.97 per cent from August 2020.
According to SMM, the total production of metallurgical grade alumina during January to August amounted to 47.66 million tonnes, an increase of 8.09% from the same period last year. The price of alumina increased rapidly in August, which in turn increased the production of alumina refineries in some areas of North China.
The net imports of alumina were estimated to be around 400,000 million tonnes, with a surplus of around 349,000 million tonnes for August.
SMM also showed that China’s production capacity of metallurgical grade alumina till early September was 71.52 million tonnes per year, with the existing capacity at 88.60 million tonnes a year. In the entire month of September (30 days), the output is expected to hover around 5.73 million tonnes, with daily average production declining slightly.
