With only 10 per cent of globally traded alumina changing hands on the spot market, Hindalco is moving its tenders online in an effort to strengthen the evidence behind benchmark prices. For a commodity market where a relatively small number of transactions can influence prices across a much larger pool of long-term contracts, the quality of the underlying data matters. That is the challenge facing alumina, and Hindalco is now testing whether digital trading infrastructure can help address it. Hindalco is expected to conduct its first digital tender for metallurgical-grade alumina on Metalshub before the end of 2026. The physical cargo sold through the tender may be only part of the significance of the transaction. The more important outcome could be the structured market data generated...

On Thursday, September 6, Alcoa Corporation announced a new power purchase agreement (PPA) with Endesa to facilitate reopening the San Ciprián aluminium smelter in Spain. Endesa is a well-known power provider in Spain and a division of the Enel Group. From 2024 through at least 2030, the agreement will include power balancing services for the smelting load. Electricity is delivered to the smelter's consumption point through balancing services directly from the market or baseload volumes from a power purchase deal with Endesa. The agreement with Endesa would cover up to 131 megawatts starting in the second half of 2025 and continuing through 2033, or little more than 30 per cent of the smelter's maximum-capacity energy needs. As the process of building wind farms progresses, the final...

Wiley Rein LLP assisted in convincing the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to grant relief from imports of dumped and subsidised aluminium extrusions from China on behalf of U.S. makers of aluminium extrusions. Following a mandated five-year "sunset review" including these items, the ITC reached its unanimous conclusion. The Commission assesses whether the cancellation of antidumping (AD) and/or countervailing duty (CVD) orders will likely result in the continuing or recurrence of significant harm to the domestic industry during such assessments. The ITC concluded following an examination that rescinding the current AD and CVD restrictions on imports of aluminium extrusions from China would probably result in the continuing or recurrence of material harm to the U.S. aluminium...

Throughout this month’s Formula One United States Grand Prix, several sustainability initiatives will be taken up by the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). The racing track would be populated with 96-gallon recycling bins and 90 per cent recycled aluminium cups provided by Ball Corporation in place of single-use plastic ones. Aluminium is infinitely recyclable, and with aluminium cups or beverage cans, it is the easiest because no additional sorting process is required. This can induce a circular economy beneficial for the entire community and the world. The President and General Manager of Ball Aluminium Cups, Emily Fong, exclaimed: “We are committed to bringing fans a more sustainable way to enjoy beverages as they watch their favourite sporting events.” “By partnering with venues like...

Spinifex Offshore Wind Farm has received $1.5 million in financing from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to supply the Portland Aluminium Smelter with up to 100 per cent renewable energy from a 1,000 MW wind farm off the southwest coast of Victoria. A wind resource evaluation will be done by Spinifex, an Alinta Energy subsidiary, and early-stage development operations leading to the building of the wind farm will be accelerated. The Portland Aluminium Smelter's existing substation would be used to link the offshore wind farm to the National Electricity Market (NEM), which would enable the smelter to run on renewable energy and reduce its carbon footprint. The smelter can produce over 358,000 tonnes of aluminium annually, more than 20 per cent of the country's total...

SPS selected Novelis as a trusted partner in developing and implementing closed-loop recycling systems around the globe for esteemed automakers...

The workers at a major West Australian refinery have walked off their jobs over what they call a "two-tiered" workplace. In a significant escalation of ongoing industrial action, workers at South32's Worsley alumina and bauxite facility have downed tools for 48 hours. Previously, the workers staged four-hour walkouts but escalated the situation after South32 responded. In addition to the 48-hour walkout, night shift employees are not showing up to work. Adam Woodage, the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) spokesman, said, "The action had not been taken lightly. It is a big escalation. What the company has been putting up is garbage, so we felt we had no choice but to send a powerful message. It will have a significant impact because these electricians are highly skilled, highly trained."...

The world's leading aluminium producer Rusal, further to a recent media report, refutes in the strongest terms any suggestion that it is planning to deliver large quantities of metal on the LME, in Europe, the U.S. or any other location. The Russian aluminium giant also notes the alarmist views expressed by other interested parties that it is damaging to the industry's confidence as a whole. Rusal stated, “We want to point out that there is no basis upon which to take any action regarding the warrantability of RUSAL's metal, and any decision otherwise could have long-lasting adverse effects on the market,...
