Bauxite is the starting material for alumina refining and primary aluminium production, but its route from mine to refinery is rarely as simple as a labelled shipment moving from one country to another. Unlike fabricated metal products, bauxite is usually traded as a loose bulk mineral. It is loaded into stockpiles, trucks, rail wagons, barges and bulk carriers, often passing through multiple handling points before reaching an alumina refinery. This logistics model keeps transport costs low for a high-volume commodity, but it also makes mine-level origin difficult to establish. The key question for traders, refiners and downstream buyers is therefore not only about where a cargo was loaded but where the ore was actually mined and whether that origin can be traced and documented along the...

On February 9, 2023, the National Employment Fund (NEF) and the Australian mining company Canyon Resources' Cameroonian subsidiary Camalco engaged in developing the project to explore the Minim Martap bauxite deposit in the Adamaoua region, inked a partnership agreement in Yaoundé. André Henry, the Director General of Camalco, said, "We intend to be close to the NEF so that precisely when we want to start the work and hire, we can rely on them to have qualified employees." The NEF will have to provide Camalco with its database of job seekers when the time comes to facilitate the recruitment of skilled labour for the Minim Martap project within the framework of this collaboration. Whenever Camalco's human resources requirements change, the mining operator should contact the NEF. Initially,...

The Moynihan Rail Hall train station in New York is decked up with an unusual form of artwork called The Hive, a set of up to nine-foot-tall models of skyscrapers made up of aluminium, inspired by a collection of 100 upside-down skyscraper models. Curated by the Berlin-based artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, which hang upside down like stalactites from the ceiling near the 31st Street entrance, the designers claimed that a mirrored base gives passengers the impression that they are projected into the metropolitan environment and produces an illusion of an imagined metropolis. "People are often in a rush when they go to the train. We thought of making something that you could get the sense of in one viewing, but if you wanted to have a full experience you could stop and look up...

As per reports, starting from April 1, a group backed by some of Canada's biggest food and beverage companies" will begin charging residents of the province a new recycling fee, touted as the pop can tax or the Container Recycling Fee (CRF). Consumers will start paying a fee of one cent on aluminium cans , two cents on small PET plastic bottles, and three cents on all other sealed, ready-to-drink non-alcoholic beverage containers in April under the CBCRA's proposed proposal. That covers everything from tetra packs to water in boxes to tomato juice in steel cans. The Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association (CBCRA), an industry-funded...

The ferroalloy smelting plant of the vertically integrated manganese and silicone metal company OM Holdings Ltd (OMH) in Malaysia’s Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu, will incorporate higher value-added silicon metal. The OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, the group's flagship smelter complex, successfully modified and converted two ferrosilicon (FeSi) furnaces into metal silicon (MetSi) furnaces to produce silicon metal. According to OM Holdings, "The first MetSi furnace is undergoing hot commissioning and performance testing." However, the MetSi furnace has a production capacity of 35 tonnes to 40 tonnes per day. The modification and conversion process involved dismantling two idle FeSi furnaces, followed by civil works and equipment installation carried out by contractors from China in...

The Huawei Mate50 Pro is one of the patented products by the Chinese mobile maker that flaunts an aluminium alloy chassis having intricate details engraved by CNC machines. The new Huawei Mate50 Pro displays a consistent Space ring Design and a very attractive Clous de Paris step-patterned pathology. The use of aluminium resonates with the increasing need for introducing more sustainable options in creating electronic devices. This happens partially because electronic devices end up in landfills without the slightest chance of being recovered. Huawei has developed a very interesting way of carving precise designs on the surface of a single aluminium alloy slab by using computer numerical control (CNC) and fine engravings. The lenses, decorative rings and the bottom crater of the Huawei...

BorgWarner has declared recently that the company will supply a prime order of aluminium cooling plates used in battery making to a leading German automobile provider. This delivery of aluminium cooling plates would be done to the German carmaker's European and US manufacturing units, where they'll be used for creating batteries for the company's patented electronic vehicles. These battery cooling plates that BorgWarner excels in producing are usually formulated out of extruded aluminium profiles that squeeze their way between the rows of cylindrical battery cells, intruding less in the construct but maintaining an overall presence inside the battery’s internal design. These plates are then netted into a web by a pipe nearing their ends, through which uninterrupted coolant flows to handle...
