The third quarter brought a clear improvement in global alumina production. It did not, however, bring production back to the level recorded a year earlier. Global alumina output has reached 114.625 million tonnes in the first nine months of 2026, down 330,000 tonnes or 0.29% (114.955 million tonnes in 2025) year-on-year. China's estimated production increased, but declines across most other reporting regions erased that gain. The quarterly sequence reveals how the production gap has developed. In the July to September 2026 quarter, alumina output reached 39.396 million tonnes, an increase of 5.54% over the preceding quarter. Yet the same quarter in 2025 had delivered 39.675 million tonnes. The latest production total was therefore 279,000 tonnes lower Y-o-Y. The first quarter of 2026...
Century Aluminum Company reported stronger financial results for the third quarter of 2026, as the restart of Line 2 at its Grundartangi facility in Iceland helped increase aluminium shipments, net sales and profitability. The production recovery, combined with favourable realised metal prices, supported a rise in net income to USD 302.6 million, compared with USD 249.3 million in the second quarter. The company's net sales reached USD 961.2 million during the quarter ended September 30, 2026, marking a sequential increase of USD 209.1 million. Aluminium shipments also climbed to 173,483 tonnes from 130,632 tonnes in the preceding quarter, reflecting the contribution of Line 2 returning to near-full production during the reporting period. The improvement in earnings was primarily driven...

Due to the unique features of aluminium, like lightweight, recyclable, corrosion resistance, and high strength, the metal is considered one of the top choices for the manufacturing industry professionals. In addition to this, aluminium is a metal which is constantly under the experimental radar. Like, researchers at Nizhny Novgorod's Lobachevsky University created aluminium alloys with high plasticity demands that might be used to create electrical and engineering equipment. On the other hand, the news of Alcoa idling one of its three potlines at Warrick aluminium owing to operational issues gathered much attention. Vedanta Limited formally announced on July 7, that it would pay INR 564.67 crore to purchase a 100% share in the heavily indebted Athena Chhattisgarh Power Limited. Under the...

On Friday, July 8, Hydro announced that it broke ground this week to mark the start of the expansion work of its aluminium recycling plant in Rackwitz, Germany. The project will require around EUR 40 million of investment to produce 25,000 tonnes of HyForge per year, increasing the use of post-consumer, end of life scrap. Eivind Kallevik, Executive Vice President for Hydro Aluminium Metal, said: “With more automotive customers putting emphasis on sustainability, we are taking this break through step at Rackwitz to produce aluminium HyForge products, resulting in even smaller diameter billets, while ensuring a best-in-class climate footprint by using a high share of post-consumer scrap in the process." He added, "The business case shows that it is not only profitable, but it also has an...

On Thursday, July 7, Vedanta Limited officially announced that it would acquire a 100 per cent stake in debt-ridden Athena Chhattisgarh Power Limited for INR 564.67 crore. The mode of payment is most likely to be cash, and the transaction is expected to complete in FY2022-23. The news came after the company said in a regulatory filing, "Vedanta Limited to acquire 100% of the paid-up capital of Athena Chhattisgarh Power Limited." The investment in 1200MW thermal power plant will be beneficial for Vedanta’s aluminium business as the latter would be able to secure required electricity for smelting at cheaper cost. Athena power plant is located at Jhanjgir Champa district, Chhattisgarh, India, at a distance of nearly 80 Km from BALCO and 180 Km from Jharsuguda. The power plant has two units...

The European Commission on Friday, July 8, announced that it will not extend the nine-month suspension of the stiff anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese flat-rolled aluminium exports. European Aluminium, the organization that represents the European aluminium value chain, applauds the decision and urges Europe to pursue strategic autonomy for aluminium. Following the European Commission's anti-dumping inquiry from the previous year, the tariffs on Chinese flat-rolled aluminium goods are set at 14 to 25 per cent to bring the dumping prices into market compliance and will take effect on July 12, 2022. “We are relieved that our producers finally are protected against the unfair competition from dumped Chinese flat-rolled products. We welcome exporters as long as they play fair. But Chinese...

Situated in Germany, GROB Systems has launched its latest GMP300 Additive Manufacturing machine that uses Liquid Metal Printing (LMP) technology in a 300 x 300 x 300 mm in-built compartment to forge aluminium parts. The GMP300 requires aluminium alloy wires as a raw material since it is a powder-free machine which has been designed to safely create additively manufactured metal products having a net-like texture. The GMP300 machine can be characterised by 3-axis kinematics which aid in faster and more precise production. GROB’s LMP methodology is confined broadly under the ISO/ASTM 52900:2015 category of Material Jetting. GROB also claims that its LMP process builds a homogenous part microstructure with a generated score similar to or even higher than the value of the initial material....

According to the Shanghai Metals Market, the average operating rate at China’s major aluminium processing enterprises has slipped by 0.2 percentage point this week ending on July 8, to stand at 66.5 per cent. Aluminium wire and cable was the only sector that recorded a growth in operating rate as the companies ramped up production and deliveries, fearing restriction on transportation amid the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuxi. The average operating rate at large wire and cable companies has increased by 1.4 percentage points to 58.4 per cent. Aluminium wire and cable companies are estimated to maintain stable production buoyed by scheduled delivery to ultra-high voltage projects, while the operating rate of other downstream sectors will continue to fall. The operating rate in the primary and...

Scientists at Nizhny Novgorod-based Lobachevsky University have developed aluminium alloys with high plasticity requirements that may be utilised to make equipment and electrical engineering. Aluminium alloys have the highest degree of hardness possible due to the existence of ultrafine grains, yet when heated, these alloys may expand several times their original size and become superplastic. Aleksey Nokhrin, director of the materials diagnostics laboratory of the university, notes that the use of scandium in the alloy leads to the formation of large pores in the case of superplasticity. This was avoided by annealing the alloy at low temperatures, causing the nanoparticles to take on a spherical shape, which helped in the formation of superplastic aluminium alloys. “Superplasticity allows...

On Thursday, July 7, aluminium billet inventories in China declined by 4,700 tonnes W-o-W across four major consumption areas. The fall in aluminium prices and the increase in COVID-19 infections made downstream buyers more willing to spend on aluminium. However, downstream orders suggest that consumption is declining thus the drop in the inventory of aluminium billets could not be sustainable. The figure below provides further information on the current state of aluminium billet inventories in China: The aluminium billet inventory in Nanchang has surged by 1,500 tonnes to settle at 4,300 tonnes from 2,800 tonnes a week ago. On the other hand, the aluminium billet inventory in Huzhou has witnessed the highest drop by 3,000 tonnes to score at 18,000 tonnes from 21,000 tonnes last week. As...
