Scatec has begun construction of the first phase of a major solar power project that will supply renewable electricity to the Aluminium Company of Egypt (Egyptalum), advancing the Egyptian producer's efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its aluminium operations. The first phase of the Dandara Solar Power project comprises a 569 MW solar plant supported by a 100-MWh battery energy storage system. The Norwegian renewable energy company has also signed loan agreements to finance the development, which was first announced in 2025. Under a 25-year power purchase agreement, the facility will supply clean electricity to Egyptalum. Once operational, the first phase is expected to generate approximately 1.4 TWh of renewable power annually and avoid more than 550,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide...

Aluminium and its usage are increasing with time. From transportation to electronics, aluminium is being used almost everywhere. The XPS 13 laptop from Dell is entirely built using CNC-machined aluminium and glass for aesthetic appeal and endurance. Aluminium alloys used for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) turning and milling are machined aluminium. The use of CNC machined aluminium in electronics has increased significantly. Due to its excellent machinability and popularity in most manufacturing industries, aluminium is the most frequently machined material. The XPS 13 chassis is made of low-carbon aluminium produced using hydroelectricity, a renewable energy source. This reduces carbon emissions by 70 per cent compared to aluminium chassis made in conventional coal-powered facilities,...

On August 18, the innovative, carbon-neutral electric bus and lightweight automobile brand Switch Mobility has revealed India’s first electric double-decker bus, called Switch EiV 22. The bus features a lightweight aluminium outer body shell that downsizes the actual weightage of the bus, keeping it in complete proportion with the passenger ratio. This is also the world’s first semi-low floor; air ventilation equipped electric double-decker vehicle with a broader door on a rear overhang and a rear staircase. Switch EiV 22 has an 18 per cent increased kerb weight than any other conventional bus but can bear almost twice the number of seated passengers. Switch EiV 22 uses the blueprint of the double-decker released in June 2022, named EiV 12, which also applies the 650 V systems as the...

The Hunter region in Australia is one of New South Wales' most popular destinations, where the aluminium smelting industry is under scrutiny as part of a Government's effort to cut greenhouse gases. The nation's largest Tomago Aluminium Smelter consumes around 11 per cent of the total energy production of NSW. However, the uppermost 200 in the country roots in about 28 per cent of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions. Chris Bowen, the Energy Minister, will commence discussions with all industrial polluters to bolster a "safeguard mechanism" policy, by which businesses would decarbonize or purchase carbon credits to offset their emissions. Based on feedback from those businesses, the Federal Government will design the mechanism. The Australian multinational mining and metal giant BHP,...

Headquartered in London, CafePod, to bring the experience of flavoured coffee to a user’s resident, has decided to supplement its Nespresso® compatible pod range with three new exquisite blends. For the first time, CafePod made its coffee pods with 80 per cent recycled aluminium which can be 100 per cent recycled after use, similar to the rest of the company’s production. Aluminium is a lightweight material extremely suitable for the packaging industry because of its malleability. Moreover, an aluminium end-of-life product can be recycled innumerable times to produce new items of utilisation. The production of primary aluminium is costly plus energy-consuming, and there is the prevailing issue of carbon emissions, whereas the production of secondary aluminium narrows down those concepts....

On Thursday, August 18, the aluminium billet inventories in China dropped by 5,200 tonnes W-o-W to settle at 116,300 tonnes, from 121,500 tonnes recorded last week. The inventory has increased in three major consumption areas and has decreased in two regions. The billets inventory stopped rising and began declining this week. Market participants are worried about the dryness during the rainy season and the probable recurrence of drastic production reductions caused by the power supply constraint that occurred last year. The figure below provides further information on the current state of aluminium billet inventories in China: Despite the weak market activity, the inventory in Changzhou, Huzhou, and Nanchang continued to rise. As per the SMM data, the inventory in Huzhou, Changzhou and...

After a surprise evaluation of the New Zealand power market, the Electricity Authority has decided to restrict power companies from signing large power deals with customers unless certain conditions are met. This is applicable to energy supply contracts of more than 150 megawatts, meaning power companies would not be allowed to strike a new power supply deal with the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter, without prior approval. Authority spokesman Sean Martin explains the Tiwai smelter’s power contract is the only one above 150MW and, therefore, requires the authority’s approval for renewal. The authority’s market policy manager Andrew Doube has explained that this measure has been taken in response to the average household paying above $200 more than they should pay for electricity each year...

Following the disparity between the labour Union, Industry Energi, and employers’ organisation, around 655 members of the Industry Energi union who also work at Hydro Sunndal will go on a strike on Monday, August 22, if employers don’t start wage talks. Norsk Hydro’s aluminium smelter in Sunndal western Norway is the largest in Europe and is also a producer of low-carbon aluminium. In addition to the 1,422 workers that went on strike on August 15 after discussions with employers collapsed last weekend, the union said that 1,115 more workers planned to walk off the job. Production at the significant metal plant will be impacted by the Hydro Sunndal strike. "We are putting increased pressure on employers to start the negotiation process again," said Frode Alfheim Industri Union's leader. A...
