Algeria has inaugurated a 300-megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power plant in El Oued Province, marking a major step in its renewable energy expansion. The El-Foulia solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, spread across 600 hectares in northeastern Algeria, is the country’s largest solar park to date and forms part of its 3.2-gigawatt (GW) national renewable energy programme.
The project will feed solar-generated electricity into the national grid, helping meet rising power demand while reducing natural gas consumption for electricity generation.

300 MWp facility strengthens Algeria’s solar capacity
The inauguration took place on October 26, 2026, in the presence of Mourad Adjal, Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy. The El-Foulia facility is part of the first phase of Algeria’s national renewable energy development programme, which targets a combined capacity of 3,200 MW across 21 power plants in 14 provinces.
The government aims to achieve 15 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2035, with solar power forming a key part of the expansion. According to Adjal’s recent budget presentation, Algeria expects approximately 2.44 GWp of additional solar capacity to enter service in 2027, following the commissioning of 760 MWp under the national programme so far.
El-Foulia is the third large-scale solar plant commissioned in Algeria in 2026, following the 200 MW facilities at Tendla and El-Ghrous. Its inauguration adds to the country’s efforts to diversify electricity generation and strengthen energy supply security.
Renewable energy expansion and industrial power demand
The El-Foulia project is intended to supply electricity to the national grid, reduce natural gas consumption in power generation, conserve conventional energy resources for other uses and support local economic development. The government has also highlighted the importance of expanding clean electricity generation to keep pace with growing demand.
Algeria’s 15 GW target by 2035 places the 300 MWp El-Foulia plant within a wider national effort to expand renewable generation and diversify the country’s energy mix.
