
In March 2022, world primary aluminium production grew month-on-month by 11.23 per cent to rebound to 5.693 million tonnes, bringing the total output in the first quarter ended March 31, 2022, to 16.459 million tonnes. In February, the production stood at 5.118 million tonnes, seeing a decline of 9.38 per cent from 5.648 million tonnes in January.

But despite the M-o-M hike in March 2022, world primary aluminium production in Q1 registered a quarter-on-quarter downfall of 1.07 per cent from 16.637 million tonnes to 16.459. Also, on a year-on-year calculation, the output in 1Q2022 saw a downfall of 1.95 per cent from 16.786 million tonnes.
In China, the world’s leading primary aluminium producer, the output in March 2022 came in at 3.293 million tonnes, up by 11.63 per cent from 2.950 million tonnes in February but down by 2.11 per cent from 3.364 million tonnes in March 2021.
In the entire quarter ended March 31, aluminium production in China totalled 9.478 million tonnes, 0.11 per cent more than 9.468 million tonnes in Q4 2021 but 3.04 per cent less than 9.775 million tonnes in Q1 2021.
In the Gulf region, primary aluminium production in March 2022 came in at 520,000 tonnes, up M-o-M by 12.55 per cent from 462,000 tonnes and by 4.84 per cent year-on-year from 496,000 million tonnes.
In Q1 2022, aluminium production in Gulf amounted to 1.499 million tonnes, down by 1 per cent from 1.514 million tonne in Q4 2021 but up by 4.02 per cent from 1.441 million tonnes in Q1 2021.
In Asia (ex-China), primary aluminium production in March 2022 stood at 390,000 tonnes, bringing the total amount of output in Q1 2022 to 1.137 million tonnes, down Q-o-Q by 1.13 per cent from 1.150 million tonnes but up by 4.03 per cent from 1.093 million tonnes in Q1 2021.
