Combustion systems are essential throughout the aluminium value chain, supplying the heat needed for melting, holding, re-heating, homogenising and heat-treatment processes. These systems are an integral part of aluminium operations and their efficiency has a direct impact on fuel consumption, production costs and product quality.

Aluminium producers are seeking to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions, which has increased demand for advanced burner technology that provides precise temperature control and minimises environmental impact. The industrial players are also considering alternative fuels, such as hydrogen and biofuels, as part of wider decarbonisation efforts.

Companies specialising in combustion engineering are helping manufacturers meet these challenges with better furnace performance, energy optimisation and emissions reduction technologies.

One such is US-based custom-engineered burner, combustion systems and industrial heating solutions provider, Bloom Engineering. Founded in 1934 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, the company serves customers across the aluminium, steel and process-heating sectors through operations in the United States, Germany, India and China.

Bloom Engineering develops combustion systems designed for high-temperature and high-efficiency industrial applications using fuels such as natural gas, hydrogen, biofuels and other gaseous and liquid fuels.

The company says that its technologies help customers reduce CO2 and NOx emissions, improve temperature uniformity, increase production capacity and lower fuel consumption.

Its portfolio includes industrial burners, combustion systems, controls engineering, aftermarket equipment and technical services. The company also provides combustion tuning, operational consulting, preventative maintenance, furnace studies and system upgrades aimed at improving safety, productivity and environmental compliance.

In addition, Bloom Engineering supports customers through installation supervision, commissioning services and operator training programmes focused on combustion efficiency, burner management systems and process optimisation.

The company’s global operations are based in the US, which is also the company’s Engineering and R&D Centre of Competence. Bloom Engineering sells, provides technical support and combustion services to customers in major industrial markets through regional business units in the US, Europe, India and China.

As aluminium producers continue to focus on operational efficiency and lower-carbon manufacturing, combustion technologies are expected to remain an important element in achieving both production and sustainability goals.
