The Western Australian Government has launched a prosecution case against an alumina refinery owned by Alcoa for allegedly breaching its operating licence.

The Department of Environment and Conservation alleges in May 2011, dust from the company's plant in the South West town of Wagerup spread beyond the boundary of the refinery.

The Department says Alcoa faces a possible $125,000 fine.

The matter will be heard in the Mandurah Magistrates Court in March.
