Volvo introduces fully electric SUV EX30 with lowest carbon content

Volvo Cars is set to unveil its latest vehicle, the EX30, on June 7th. This small, fully electric SUV is designed to meet the demands of the modern era while focusing on safety and environmental responsibility. A successor to Volvo's 2024 year model C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge EVs, the EX30 aims to further improve sustainability by reducing its lifecycle carbon emissions by an impressive 25%.

Usually, electric vehicles have the upper hand due to zero "tailpipe" emissions. Here Volvo has felt the need to curtail emissions from other sources, such as production and grid electricity. Volvo EX30's selective approach to materials and construction mirrors its commitment to minimising environmental impact.

As the smallest vehicle in the Volvo warehouse, the EX30 will be built using fewer steel and aluminium materials, which are primary reasons for production-related carbon dioxide emissions. A major ratio of the metals used in the EX30 will be recycled, with approximately 25% of the aluminium and 17% of the steel having recycled originations. 

In addition, the vehicle showcases Volvo's innovative use of recycled materials, with an impressive 17% recycled plastic incorporated into its interior components and bumpers. Sustainable materials such as flax, a wool blend containing 70% recycled polyester, and even denim trim sourced from repurposed jeans will uphold the EX30's internal ambience.

Volvo's commitment to reducing energy consumption spreads beyond the production process. The EX30 will be put together in a facility run by an unlimited source of climate-neutral energy, for example, 100% climate-neutral electricity. Volvo has also gathered assurance from 95% of its Tier 1 suppliers to plug into 100% renewable energy by 2025.
