
A vote will be reportedly held today, on January 16, on a move to block the lifting of sanctions affecting Aughinish Alumina in Limerick. Per the report, 11 Republican senators went against their own party and joined hands with Democrats to allow the vote to proceed.

In December, the US Treasury had announced its intention to remove the sanctions against Rusal, the Russian parent company of Aughinish Alumina, but on a condition that Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska had to relinquish control of the company. So, as part of the deal, the three Deripaska companies - Rusal, En+ and power firm EuroSibEnergo agreed to restructure to reduce Deripaska’s stakes.
Following the board restructuring agreement, Rusal’s board chairman Mattias Warnig also resigned from his post, as per the report from Reuters. Two days after Mr. Jean-Pierre was appointed as the chairman of the Company with effect from January 1, 2019.
The Irish government had been lobbying the US officials to highlight the impact on Aughinish Alumina as there were fears over the future of the plant due to the sanctions. Aughinish Alumina employs 460 staff, 200 contractors and indirectly supports hundreds of additional jobs.
Earlier this month, a number of European Ambassadors including Ireland’s representative in Washington Dan Mulhall sent a letter to Congress urging members to support the lifting of sanctions.
But in the recent time, Democrats voiced their opposition to the move, accusing the Trump administration of being soft on Russia.
The US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “This is a sham. It’s a sham to do a favour not only to Deripaska but to Putin."
The second-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives Steny Hoyer even called on the Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin earlier to delay lifting the sanctions until 28 February so that Congress gets more time to review the plan.
