
The US dollar rose against the British pound and the euro, on the back of better-than-expected US manufacturing sector data. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of other currencies, climbed 0.2% and ended at 97.66. LME base metals most increased with the SHFE complex trading higher across the board. LME aluminium lost 0.55% and SHFE aluminium rose 0.25%.
While LME base metals ended mostly higher overnight, three-month LME aluminium slipped as downward pressure piled up after prices hovered rangebound for nearly two weeks. It closed down 0.55% at US$1,717 per tonne, losing all the gains from the prior session. Three months LME aluminium is likely to trade at US$1,710-1,740 per tonne.

As on October 24, Thursday, LME aluminium cash (bid) price stood at US$ 1713 per tonne, LME official settlement price stands at US$ 1715 per tonne; 3-months bid price stands at US$ 1722 per tonne, 3-months offer price is US$ 1724 per tonne; Dec 20 bid price stands at US$ 1807 per tonne, and Dec 20 offer price stands at US$ 1812 per tonne.
The LME aluminium opening stock dropped to 968525 tonnes. Live Warrants totalled at 791775 tonnes, and Cancelled Warrants were 176750 tonnes.
LME aluminium 3-months Asian Reference Price is hovering at US$ 1727 per tonne.
SHFE Aluminium Price Trend
Benchmark aluminium price for SHFE (Shanghai Future Exchange) has dropped to USD 1998 per tonne today, 24 October 2019.
The most traded SHFE 1912 contract ended the trading day 0.29% higher at RMB 13,825 per tonne, recovering from an earlier low of RMB 13,800 per tonne as downside potential was hampered by falling inventories and firm spot premiums. The December contract retreated after gain and returned above the five- and 10- day moving averages and ended higher for the fourth straight day by 0.25% at RMB 13,850 per tonne. Trading range today is expected at RMB 13,750-13,900 per tonne.
SHFE aluminium remains under pressure from the 20-, 40- and 60-day moving averages however, and it is expected to remain weak and rangebound in the short term.
