The US alumina import drops 23% Q-o-Q in Q2 2018 while the export surges 20%

According to the latest USGS report on bauxite and alumina import by the United States in the second Quarter 2018, the volume found dropped from 434, 190 tonnes in the first quarter of the year to 353,000 tonnes. This shows that the alumina import volume by the US stood down 23 per cent quarter-on-quarter but grew year-on-year as per the report released by USGS. In the second quarter of 2017, the United States had imported around 300,050 tonnes of alumina in total, 15 per cent less from Q2 2018 while in the second quarter of 2016; the country imported 16 per cent lesser to 296,520 tonnes.

Brazil accounted for the major share of alumina supply to the US in Q2 2018 by exporting 41 per cent of the total volume, followed by Australia (28%), and Jamaica (12%).

Imports in the first quarter spiked as aluminium smelters restarting capacity stockpiled alumina ahead of production, and the decline in imports in the second quarter was attributed to the smelters slowing delivers.

Unlike the import, alumina export from the United States rose in the second quarter of 2018 to 104,000 tonnes, 20 per cent up from 83,200 tonnes in the first quarter of 2018. But compared to the second quarter of 2017 and 2016, the volume dropped 31 per cent from 136,240 tonnes and 72 per cent from 178,880 tonnes, respectively.

Out of the total export in Q2 2018, the Netherlands sourced 20 per cent, Mexico 18 per cent and Norway 15 per cent.

The alumina import by the United States is likely to plunge further in the coming time as many refineries in the country are considering expanding their productions. New Day Aluminum Holdings LLC, the parent company of Noranda Bauxite and Alumina LLC, has already announced that it will expand capacity at its alumina refinery in Gramercy, LA. A second chemical-grade alumina production line will also be added to the 1.2-million-metric-ton-per-year (Mt/yr) refinery.

Although the exact amount of additional capacity is not known yet, a spokesperson intimates that chemical-grade alumina would account for more than 50% of the refinery’s production once the project is completed. Installation of new red mud filtering technology would also be part of the modernization and expansion project and would significantly expand red mud storage capacity at the refinery. A completion schedule is also still not available.
