According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. South Korea's imports of aluminium scrap from the US stood at 19,700 tonnes in March 2021, a decrease of 28.36% from 27,500 tonnes in March 2020, as updated by the US Census Bureau. The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) has announced that a record 20 million tonnes of post-consumer scrap intake in 2019, indicating nearly 60 per cent of total scrap intake. Recycled aluminium products manufacturer Chongqing Shunbo Aluminum Co has decided to construct a 5.6 billion yuan ($868.45 million) production base in China’s eastern Anhui province, Reuters reported. In a filing to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, Shunbo inked a deal with Bowang district in the city of Maanshan for the establishment of a project with annual production of 400,000 tonnes of green aluminium, 300,000 tonnes of slab and 200,000 tonnes of aluminium bar. According to a recent report, the world’s top private-sector Chinese aluminium maker China Hongqiao Group will put a secondary aluminium plant into operation at its home province in Shandong at the end of 2021. According to a recent report, Rick Hindley has resigned as Executive Director of the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) to join the coffee pod recycling service PodBack, which launched a first-of-its-kind recycling programme for aluminium coffee pods last month. Mr Hindley’s 15 years of experience in the aluminium packaging recycling sector is believed to contribute extensively to PodBack’s new recycling scheme. Hindley also knows the local authority sector well as there are some concerns among council recycling officers over the merits of the use of pods for making coffee.
