According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Bermco Aluminum has idled production capacity at its secondary aluminum smelter, while Imperial Alloys Corp. is coming off a reduced production schedule. Both companies cited tight profit margins caused by a decoupling of scrap purchasing prices and alloy sales tags for their decisions. Birmingham, Ala.-based Bermco has idled a furnace representing some 5 million to 6 million pounds of monthly production, or roughly one-quarter of the site’s total capacity, head of sales Bob Hollabaugh said, adding that the company still has two other furnaces running. Aluminum producer Alcoa has bought beverage can recycling company Evermore Recycling, which it describes as the world’s biggest purchaser of recycled cans. Alcoa and Novelis previously were partners in the recycling company, but Alcoa took control of Evermore at the end of August. Alcoa’s Evermore Recycling is now a part of Alcoa’s Global Packaging group and will continue to be based in Nashville, Tenn. It is far from Aloca’s first move into the recycling space. Japan is increasing exports of scrap aluminum to China as it gets higher prices overseas, market sources said Wednesday. The country exported 47,645 mt of scrap aluminum to China over January to July, up from 39,878 mt a year ago, customs data released last week showed. Japan's total scrap aluminum exports to 14 countries rose to 74,624 mt from 67,091 mt a year earlier. In Japan, 6063 aluminum sliding door scrap (0.2-0.6% silicon, 0.45-0.9% magnesium, 0.1% copper) is trading at Yen 115-125/kg ex-yard for September deliveries, three local traders said. Aluminium can recycler Novelis is to resume purchasing cans from the spot market within weeks, once additional shredding capacity is installed at the front end of its Warrington facility. The 130,000 tonne per annum capacity aluminium can recycling plant is currently only accepting material from contracted suppliers, while the new equipment is installed. Commissioning is expected to take place later this month, with it then likely to be running at full capacity shortly after. Coca-Cola revealed today that 10.5 million plastic bottles collected during the Olympics have already been recycled and returned to retail shelves. The 10.5 million bottles collected during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are now dispersed between 42 million new bottles each containing 25% recycled PET material. The recycling took place at Coca-Cola Enterprises’ purpose built plant known as Continuum Recycling. Located in Lincolnshire the plant cost £15m to build and is run as a joint venture between Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) and ECO Plastics. The plant opened in May this year. Alcoa and its charitable branch, the Alcoa Foundation, is to invest a sum of US$ 2 million in the new US Action to Accelerate Recycling (AAR) initiative to improve the domestic recycling rate. Atlanta-based Novelis, a world-leader in rolled aluminium products, has today announced that it has moved a step closer to achieving its goal of using 80% recycled metals in its production processes. The company's second annual sustainability report shows an increase in the recycled content of its products from 33% to 39% one year after announcing its target of achieving an 80% recycled content by 2020. Residents living in South Carlsbad no longer will have to drive to the recycling center on Greene Street or to the convenience station on Lamont Street to drop off their recycling materials. The city has installed two large roll-off recycling containers on the south end of the Walmart parking lot.
