According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Novelis, the leading aluminium rolling and recycling company will receive more cans now thanks to two new aggregation centres. These centres, catering to the London and South East region, will be equipped with more options that ease the delivery of used cans to the centres. This expansion is a part of Novelis’ strategy to achieve 80% capacity of recycled content by 2020 by using its existing network of used aluminium can supplier. Nespresso, which is the premium coffee brand of Nestlé, has announced its aim to achieve a 100 percent recycling of its aluminium capsules by expanding their recycling capacity. At present the capacity is at 75% where customers can order recycling bags when the order their coffee online as Nespresso Club Members or buy it from a Nespresso store. The aluminium capsules are then returned via these recycling bags which are either collected from customers’ premises or the customers drop them off at the store. Novelis Inc. has partnered with the Marietta craft-beer manufacturer, the Red Hare Brewing Company, to bring beverage cans produced almost entirely out of recycled material. Ye Chiu Metal Recycling (China) Ltd. reported a 92.15% year-on-year fall in net profits to 5.64 million yuan ($ 0.91 million) during the first six months of the year, it said in its semiannual financial report. The company attributed the slump in net profits to falling prices of copper , aluminum and lead , which sent its gross margin down 2.16% on the year and business revenues down 3.89% on a yearly basis to 2.3 billion yuan, the company added. The company sold only 146,800 tonnes of aluminum ingot during H1 2014, down 11.49% from a year earlier, also partly contributing to the plunge in net profits, it said.

Andritz MeWa, part of the Germany-based Andritz Group, has completed a recycling plant for electrical and electronic scrap and refrigerators in the town of Karcag in eastern Hungary. The plant is the start of the new Eco-Center being set up in Karcag intended to strengthen the region’s economy with several hundred new jobs. The Beijing-based China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association Recycling Metal Branch (CMRA) says data released by China Customs shows that in June 2014 China imported 3.7 million tons of scrap commodities, including metal, paper and plastic scrap. The value of the 350,000 tons of “unwrought coppers and copper products” imported in June was $2.65 billion, according to CMRA, representing a “slight dip” from the previous month.
