According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Chinook has partnered with European Metal Recycling to develop a world-leading recycling and energy-from-waste plant, now commissioning in Oldbury, West Midlands. EU countries will face tougher recycling targets and a ban on burying recyclable waste in landfills under plans presented by the European Commission. The proposals are part of the Commission’s Waste Targets Review, which includes updated recycling targets of 70 percent of household waste and 80 percent of packaging waste by 2030. Material-specific targets would be set to gradually increase to reach 90 percent for paper by 2025, and by 2030 targets would be 60 percent for plastics, 80 percent for wood, and 90 percent for ferrous metal, aluminum and glass. The decision by the European Commission to split the proposed non-ferrous and ferrous 2030 packaging targets will lead to extra cost, according to the European Aluminum Association (EAA). Under the proposals published by the European Commission last week, 80 per cent of packaging will need to be recycled or prepared for reuse by 2030. If the majority of citizens indicate through an online survey that they want the program, officials say the city will move forward with the plan. If approved, all residents will be signed up for the service, but they will be able to make a phone call and opt-out at any time, Santa Clara City Manager Ed Dickie said. The city, itself, would not provide the service, but it would administer the billing through the monthly utility bill.
