Primary weekly recap: Vedanta appoints John Slaven as CEO for its Aluminium Business

The primary aluminium segment has recorded some of the most interesting quips last week, with John Slaven being appointed by Vedanta Ltd as the Chief Executive Officer for its Aluminium Business. Slaven will begin his tenure in the company from October 3 this year and will remain in chair for the next 3.5 years. The LME aluminium price live chart flashed a depletion of US$48.50 per tonne or 2.2 per cent Week-on-Week from 31 July when the aluminium ingot price stood at US$2,195.50 per tonne to 3 August’s price of US$2,147 per tonne. If we consider the prices in August 2022, there has been a Year-on-Year plunge of US$256 per tonne or 10.65 per cent, which is quite huge. On the other hand, the SHFE aluminium price closing curve was on a brighter side with US$17 per tonne or 0.66 per cent being added to 31 July’s US$2,572 per tonne. If compared with 4 August, when the SHFE aluminium price stood at US$2,589 per tonne, we can see a Year-on-Year downfall of US$133 per tonne or 4.89 per cent. Japanese buyers have reportedly agreed to the premium of $127.50 per tonne for aluminium shipments for the third quarter of 2023, close to $125-130 per tonne range in the previous quarter ended June 30. The premium remains restrained for the September quarter due to ample stocks and sluggish domestic demand.

In May 2023, the United States' primary aluminium production stood at 65,000 tonnes, reflecting a month-on-month increase of 2,000 tonnes or 3.17 per cent from 63,000 tonnes, found the US Census Bureau data. The data also indicated that the monthly output recovered from the loss of 3 per cent occurred in the previous month. However, on a year-on-year calculation, the output in May edged a sharp fall of 19,000 tonnes or 22.62 per cent from 84,000 tonnes.

The LME aluminium price chart shows a continued downfall in closing prices, with LME aluminium cash bid price and LME aluminium official settlement price losing US$29.50 per tonne to settle at US$2,146.50 per tonne and US$2,147 per tonne, respectively, as of Thursday, August 3.

According to the SMM market price chart, on August 4, China’s aluminium ingot price augmented by RMB 80 per tonne to rest at RMB 18,530 per tonne, with the average prices ranging between RMB 18,510 per tonne and RMB 18,550 per tonne.
