EU–India trade agreement opens a new regulatory perspective for Indian aluminium producers

The conclusion of negotiations on the EU–India Free Trade Agreement creates a new context for Indian manufacturers considering the European market, but future opportunities will increasingly depend on regulatory preparedness as well as commercial competitiveness. Negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement were concluded in January 2026. Earlier this month, the European Commission submitted proposals to the EU Council for its signature and conclusion. The Agreement is not yet in force and remains subject to the required European and Indian procedures. For the Indian aluminium industry, the development comes at a time when access to Europe is increasingly shaped by environmental, product and supply-chain regulation. One of the most immediate examples is the European Union’s Carbon Border...

China's aluminium output soars despite trade barriers

China’s aluminium production rose to 2.68 million tonnes last month from 2.57 million tonnes in April, and 2.67 million tonnes a year ago, according to the data. Output declined 1.7 per cent in the first five months to 12.62 million tonnes. Chinese smelters, which had pledged to slash production to bolster prices, are bringing back idled capacity after prices rebounded this year. With most producers in the world’s largest supplier enjoying solid margins, output growth will accelerate to 4 per cent year-on-year in the second half, Goldman Sachs Group Inc said in a report earlier this month. China’s fading infrastructure boom has left it saddled with too much capacity after decades of rapid growth. The nation is exporting its surplus at record rates, drawing the ire of international rivals....

Hazardous aluminium waste can be converted into fuel-grade carbon

Nagpur-based JNARDDC develops detoxifying process that destroys 98 per cent of cyanide from the aluminium waste and converts it into Carbon that can be used in place of coal. Dealing with hazardous waste, especially destroying cyanide contents from Spent Pot Lining (SPL), was a cause of concern for aluminium industry in the country. Nagpur-based Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development and Design Centre (JNARDDC) has developed a revolutionary detoxifying process to deal with cyanide contents from SPL and convert it into Carbon of the grade which can be used in place of coal. “Aluminium industry of the country produces about 50,000 tonnes of SPL every year which contains 90 per cent of poisonous cyanide and remaining are valuable materials such as high fuel value carbon,” Dr Upendra...

US-China meeting deepens financial ties but fails to find solution to global aluminium surplus

China has, for the first time, included the United States in a government scheme allowing American banks to clear renminbi-denominated transactions - in one of the few positive outcomes of the two sides' high-level dialogue that failed to narrow their differences over certain other issues like the South China Sea disputes that are of high strategic significance. China will grant the United States a 250 billion yuan (S$52 billion) quota under its Renminbi Qualified Foreign Institutional Investment (RQFII), significantly expanding the programme that stood at 501.77 billion yuan last month. The move makes the US the second-largest quota holder, behind Hong Kong with 270 billion yuan. The other countries involved in the scheme include Singapore, which joined the programme in 2013 and got its...

Producers seek Q3 aluminium premiums of $100-110/T from Japan buyers

Top aluminium producers have offered Japanese buyers premiums of $100-110 per tonne for July-September primary metal shipments, down 4-15 percent from the previous quarter, three sources directly involved in pricing talks said on Tuesday. Japan is Asia's biggest importer of aluminium and the premiums it agrees to pay each quarter over the London Metal Exchange (LME) cash price set the benchmark for regional primary metal shipments. For the April-June quarter, Japanese buyers agreed to pay producers a premium of $115-$117 per tonne PREM-ALUM-JP, up about 5-6 percent from the prior quarter, due to lower local inventories. In late May, a major aluminium producer offered Japanese buyers a premium of $110 per tonne for July-September shipments, down 4-6 percent from the previous quarter,...
