US Fed rate hike lands, accelerated aluminium ingot destocking expected to support aluminium prices

Macro perspective: Outside China, the US Fed raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75per cent-4.00per cent as expected, the first hike since July 2023, with a unanimous FOMC vote. The dot plot showed one more possible rate hike in 2026, extending the period of high interest rates. As a result, US Treasuries saw heavy selling, the US dollar and real yields rose, directly weighing on the valuation of dollar-denominated nonferrous metals. Geopolitically, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz persisted, with Iran claiming the strait was under its "smart control," and a regional shipping security meeting originally scheduled in Oman was forced to be postponed, raising energy transport and risk premiums. Overall, macro sentiment was mixed. Fundamentals: Supply side, this week, China's weekly...

Ahmad Al-Alshaikh, executive vice president of Maaden’s Aluminum Business Unit, said demand is expected to reach at least 1.6 million tonnes annually by 2030, up from around 1 million tonnes currently. Consumption could potentially double over the next five to seven years, he said. Speaking on the sidelines of the Fastmarkets International Aluminium Conference in Budapest, Al-Alshaikh said construction of 15 new stadiums for the football tournament is helping to support aluminium demand, Reuters reported. Major exhibitions and preparations for the World Cup are also expected to contribute to...

Failed to reach an energy agreement, Montenegro’s sole aluminium smelter KAP shuts down

In the Balkan nation, Montenegro Uniprom has closed down the country’s exclusive aluminium smelter, KAP, with the proceedings being accomplished by 30 th December 2021, following its failure to agree on a new electricity price with power company EPCG. However, Uniprom notified earlier that it would close KAP due to the skyrocketing price of electricity making its production unviable. Veselin Pejovic, the CEO and Founder of Uniprom Group held liable EPCG for being responsible for this extreme decision, while on the other hand, EPCG urged Pejovic to sit for another round of discussions to find a solution. KAP was paying €45 per MWh plus VAT by the end of 2021, whereas on international markets the electricity price is now around €250 per MWh. The energy supply contract between KAP and EPCG...

NALCO chairman Sridhar Patra anticipates supply-demand gap to increase in 2022

According to Sridhar Patra, the chairman and managing director of NALCO, the supply-demand mismatch in the aluminium market is expected to grow in 2022. Aluminium prices have swung wildly in the last year, rising 42% for the year despite a 12% drop from their peak. In 2021, the stock price of National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), a major aluminium producer, has increased by almost 130%. A mismatch in the global aluminium market, according to Patra, may keep prices high, with prices hovering around USD 2,600-2,700 per tonne. National Aluminium Corporation Limited (NALCO) is a well-known name in Eastern India's industrial landscape. It's one of the country's largest combined Bauxite-Alumina-Aluminium-Power Complexes. MQP kicks off 2022 with a 40% higher efficiency grain refiner

While the pandemic isn’t over, I believe we are moving into a more positive era. The DS&P 500 average is up by 26.9% on last year and we are seeing a real uptick in customer activity. Wind the clock back a year and while plants were still operational, many technical and managerial staff were furloughed and product trials to improve process efficiencies were put on the backburner. Like others in our boat, we felt the impact of this, but towards the end of the year, we started seeing renewed interest. Three of the major groups who are keen to start exploring ways to reduce costs and improve quality again have started trialling our high-efficiency Optifine grain refiner, which looks positive. Optifine has been used to successfully cast over 16 million tonnes of aluminium since 2010 and we...

The current Covid 19 pandemic has brought many businesses to a halt and has posed severe challenges but has also presented us with opportunities to invent. One of the most talked-about issues has been the supply chain disruption and its impact on manufacturing. That is where additive manufacturing has been able to address this disruption through on-demand and on-site manufacturing, also known as distributed manufacturing. Potentially servicing customers at the point of need and in...
