US Fed rate hike lands, accelerated aluminium ingot destocking expected to support aluminium prices

Macro perspective: Outside China, the US Fed raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75per cent-4.00per cent as expected, the first hike since July 2023, with a unanimous FOMC vote. The dot plot showed one more possible rate hike in 2026, extending the period of high interest rates. As a result, US Treasuries saw heavy selling, the US dollar and real yields rose, directly weighing on the valuation of dollar-denominated nonferrous metals. Geopolitically, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz persisted, with Iran claiming the strait was under its "smart control," and a regional shipping security meeting originally scheduled in Oman was forced to be postponed, raising energy transport and risk premiums. Overall, macro sentiment was mixed. Fundamentals: Supply side, this week, China's weekly...

The company said it was working on alternate strategies to mitigate a capital increase as a result of larger inventories in a second quarter production report released today. “Third party port performance at Richards Bay and ongoing congestion in global shipping conditions” said South32 It also cited chain supply issues at its global operations as a result of Covid-19. South32 said it took advantage of "different discharge and cargo transportation possibilities" to profit from high aluminium prices. “We expect the current working capital build to unwind once we...

Russia-Ukraine conflict may affect global aluminium market, says Alcoa Corp.

Alcoa Corp., the largest aluminium manufacturer in the United States, cautioned investors on Wednesday that any confrontation between Russia and Ukraine might affect the global aluminium market. Any form of aggressiveness, according to Chief Executive Officer Roy Harvey, might affect supplies from Russia, the world's second-largest aluminium producer. It might also lead to an increase in energy prices, which would have a knock-on effect on the aluminium sector due to the metal's high energy consumption. In response to a question about the hazards that a war would pose to the sector, Harvey stated that it may also disrupt demand. “That can very quickly impact the supply,” Harvey said in a call with analysts. President Joe Biden stated during a press conference on Wednesday that he believes...
