Saudi aluminium demand to climb 1.8mt as World Cup projects boost construction

Saudi Arabia’s domestic aluminium demand could rise to 1.8 million tonnes a year by 2030, up from around 1 million tonnes currently, according to Maaden’s executive vice president for aluminium, Ahmad al-Alshaikh. He expects that demand could potentially double over the next five to seven years. Speaking at the Fastmarkets International Aluminium Conference in Budapest on Wednesday, al-Alshaikh said demand could potentially reach between 1.6 million and 1.8 million tonnes by the end of the decade. Al-Alshaikh linked the expected growth to construction activity in Saudi Arabia, including projects connected with the country hosting major expositions and the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The tournament is expected to require 15 new stadiums, adding to demand for aluminium and other materials. Maaden...

Alcoa resumes operations with 95% strength in its Portland Aluminium smelter

On 22 December, news came floating that Alcoa’s Portland Aluminium smelter has resumed production with an annual capacity of 35,000 metric tonnes. The production had been reduced up until now in the Victoria-based Australian aluminium smelter. As soon as the reboot was successful, Portland Aluminium began producing almost 95 per cent of its actual capacity of 358,000 metric tonnes. Around 186,000 metric tonnes of Alcoa’s consolidated capacity is now in the pipeline. The Acting Operations Manager of Portland Aluminium, Mark Crespan, claimed that the prompt optimisation of the 40th and final most pot for the Line 2 East project could be attributed to the intense effort spent by a huge team of expert individuals, all backed by a broad cluster of Australian and international enthusiasts. However, the effort to restart the facility was doomed due to the high cost of electricity. In April 2020, Alcoa announced its Ferndale smelter's suspension in Washington due to declining demand and falling metal prices. To reduce the revival plant's carbon footprint and support Gov. Jay Inslee's campaign to tackle climate change, the state was asked to contribute $10 million to the project. But they were unable to reach an agreement. The main obstacle was the inability of the BPA and the New York City-based private equity firm...
