According to the report from the International Aluminium Institute and the Aluminum Association, the annual rate of global primary aluminium production was at 58.9 million tonnes during October 2016. This records a drop of 2.3 per cent from the September 2016 rate of 60.2 million tonnes. The increased rate in September was due to the restarted capacity and new capacity extension in China in September which slowed down in October.
Actual monthly production in North America (U.S. and Canada) was up 3.7 per cent in October MOM, but down 10.5% YOY. Production in China for October was up 1.9% Y/Y, but down 1.9% YTD. ROW actual production stood at 1.92 million in October, up 3.4% YOY. On a YTD estimate for 2016, actual global production stood at an estimated 48.0 million tonnes, a slight drop from the same period in 2015.

According to USGS Mineral Industry Surveys for Aluminium in September 2016, U.S. primary aluminium production during September 2016 was 61,000 tons, which recorded a drop of 53% from that of September 2015. This was primary due to the smelter closure across the U.S. The average daily production in September, however, was 2,020 ton, which is slightly up from that of August 2016. Primary aluminium production during the first three quarters of 2016 was 47% lower than that of the same period in 2015.
