Everything on recycling - Speira invests 40m € in circular can business
• Transformation of the Rhine plant progresses • Expansion of storage areas for scrap cans completed Neuss, 5 September 2025 – Anyone travelling east on the A 57 motorway is familiar with the four 85-metre-high chimneys of the former aluminium smelter at Rheinwerk in Neuss. Daniel Rinkert knows the 300-metre-long halls, where primary aluminium was smelted using enormous amounts of energy, from his many visits. Now the SPD member of the Bundestag from Grevenbroich was back, but the electrolysis furnaces had disappeared – replaced by partition walls for huge storage boxes. This is transformation you can touch, the very concrete change from a linear to a circular business model. “Speira has moved away from energy-intensive primary production. This decision was inevitable in light of...

RUSAL becomes the first to implement machine hearing technology in alumina production
Moscow, September 2, 2025 - RUSAL, one of the world’s largest aluminium producers, has introduced machine hearing technology into alumina production. This innovation utilises mathematical algorithms to analyse acoustic vibrations from mill operations, enabling the optimisation of bauxite ore loading, reducing equipment wear, and lowering energy consumption. RUSAL’s Engineering Department developed a machine hearing system to control mill loading and successfully tested it on a small wet grinding unit at the Krasnoturinsk alumina plant. RUSAL has developed and implemented numerous machine vision technologies, and the company now applies machine hearing for the first time. Vibroacoustic sensors on the mill supports capture operational sounds and convert them into digital signals. A...

GreenCap Solutions to test novel carbon capture technology in aluminium production
GreenCap Solutions has announced the launch of a demonstration project to test its carbon capture technology in primary aluminium production. The initiative targets the challenge of capturing CO₂ from low-concentration point sources, one of the most significant hurdles in the aluminium industry. The direct emissions of CO₂ from the electrolysis process in primary aluminium production is approximately 1.5 kg of CO₂ per kg of liquid aluminium. However, the low concentration of CO₂ in the flue gases, around 1 per cent, poses a major obstacle to effective capture. GreenCap will validate its novel carbon capture technology in collaboration with Norwegian aluminium and renewable energy company Hydro. We are very excited to partner with Hydro to advance our carbon capture technology for...

RUSAL produces high-purity aluminium with breakthrough inert anode technology
RUSAL, one of the world’s largest aluminium producers has achieved stable production of Grade A7 aluminium using inert anode technology. This milestone marks a critical step toward the industrial implementation of this breakthrough process. Unlike conventional methods, inert anode electrolysis emits oxygen instead of carbon dioxide and significantly reduces unwanted impurities in the aluminium. Following extensive and successful trials, RUSAL has confirmed the operational stability of its proprietary industrial-scale inert anode technology. This process enables the consistent production of commercial-grade A7 aluminium (international equivalent: P1020). Stability at this level is the key requirement for transitioning from pilot testing to full-scale industrial deployment of a technology...
