Hydro reaches key milestone in development of zero-emission aluminium technology
Hydro has produced aluminium using its new HalZero electrolysis technology for the first time. The milestone marks an important step in Hydro’s work to develop a new primary aluminium production process with the aim of achieving net-zero emissions. Since 2016, Hydro’s technology teams have been working to develop HalZero, an entirely new process for producing primary aluminium, which could replace the technology used globally today, first patented in 1886. The new technology is based on converting alumina into aluminium chloride before electrolysis in a process designed to keep chlorine and carbon in closed loops. During 2024 and 2025, Hydro has donated more than 10,000 pieces of flame-retardant workwear to Ukrainian fire and rescue services. The donation is the result of a broad collaboration between Hydro's Norwegian aluminium plants and the inclusive business Sogn Vekst in Årdal. The flame-retardant jackets and pants became available when Hydro updated the protective clothing kits at all its Norwegian aluminium plants.
