EDITED BY : RUPANKAR MAJUMDER 2MINS READ

According to the data revealed by the General Administration of Customs of China, it has been reported that 196,000 tonnes of alumina were imported into China in November 2022, representing an increase of 24.2 per cent over the previous year and a reduction of 21.8 per cent over the previous month.

Indonesia accounted as the largest alumina supplier to China

Alumina shipments increased to 85,000 tonnes simultaneously, up 984.9 per cent on the year and 45.6 per cent on the month.

Notably, exports to Russia increased by 54.6 per cent MoM to 80,000 tonnes, making up 93.7 per cent of all monthly exports.

Between January and November, total alumina imports were 1.87 million metric tonnes, down 39.3 per cent from the previous year, and total alumina exports were 950,000 tonnes, up 719.5 per cent.

The alumina import window remained closed in November in terms of import volume. The CIF prices of imported alumina were only around RMB110 per tonne higher than domestic prices, even though dealers using arbitrage were not encouraged to engage in trading. Chinese businesses continued to buy imported alumina based on stiff demand despite low earnings and a domestic alumina excess. As the largest alumina supplier to China, Indonesia overtook Australia for the first time, making its imports up 45.98 per cent of the overall import volume.

Chinese enterprises typically placed orders based on strict demand when there were import profits from Indonesian alumina purchases.

However, Indonesia's domestically invested alumina plants were running smoothly, resulting in increased production capacity. As a result, an increasing number of Chinese businesses began to import bauxite-processed alumina.

The World of Aluminium Extrusions

Alumina exports totalled 85,000 tonnes, up 984.9 per cent from the previous year and 45.6 per cent from the last month. Exports to Russia increased by 54.6 per cent MoM to 80,000 tonnes, making up 93.7 per cent of all monthly exports. Overall, Russia remained the top country to which domestic alumina exports were shipped.

SMM asserts that alumina refineries in nations including Malaysia, Vietnam, and India actively wanted to export alumina to Russia. The Russian buyers tended to buy alumina on declines to cut costs while increasing efficiency. Therefore, Chinese alumina purchases decreased.
