
The imports of commodities by North Korea during the last five years have
decreased and are estimated to continue in the coming years. The imports of alumina by the country also dropped
during the last two years. North Korea‘s
alumina import is estimated to fall considerably in 2017.

According to the estimated data, North Korea imported about
8185 tonnes of alumina in 2015. The amount noticeably fell in 2016 to reach 6408
tonnes. The country is estimated to import about 2257 tonnes of alumina in
2017, an extreme decline.

The cost of alumina import stood at USD 3.29 million in
2015. In 2016, the import generated a cost of USD 2.02 million. The cost
of import for alumina in 2017 is estimated to be USD 0.43 million. The
cost of alumina is also estimated to drop significantly this year.
The country imported 200 tonnes of alumina in July 2017 and 1,751
tonnes during January- July, down 59.29 per cent year-on year from China, the
top supplier to North Korea.
The country imports huge amount of alumina from China. China remains the top exporter of alumina in 2016, according to latest statistics.
