A day after India’s coal ministry rejected Nalco’s claim of fuel shortage related CPP unit closure claiming that the PSU had ample supply of coal to the amount of 4.7 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the aluminium producer said it has “not” yet cut any production at its aluminium smelter due to coal crisis.
"As on date, Nalco has not curtailed any production (aluminium metal) at smelter plant due to coal crisis," Nalco said Tuesday in a Bombay Stock Exchange filing.

The Navaratna aluminium company said that there is a coal issue across the nation and that the independent power plants are given priority over the captive power plants when it comes to the supply of coal. Since, Nalco sources power from CPP for its aluminium smelter plant, it has been facing such problems from close quarters.
"However, to tide over the situation and to sustain the production, Nalco is augmenting power to the tune of 120 MW through import from State Grid," the company said.
Dry fossil fuel is supplied to Nalco mainly from Bharatpur opencast mines of Talcher Coalfield of MCL (Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd) - a Coal India arm. The ministry had noted that in case there was a shortage of supply from this mine the balance could be supplied from other opencast mines of Talcher Coalfields.
Nalco has a regular coal linkage for supply of 4.716 MTPA coal from MCL, the ministry said.
