The National Minerals Information Center (NMIC) launches the NMIC Seminars series, a collection of insightful presentations focusing on the trends and issues affecting global and domestic minerals, mining, and metallurgy and their respective processes and applications. From ore bodies to consumer products, the goal is to create a collection of knowledgeable resources for everyone, from the most studied expert to the youngest future miner.
This month's seminar featuring China's Economic Rebalancing Act-Implications for the World Economy will be held on August 18 in the USGS National Center Auditorium (12201 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston, VA 20192).

The seminar will feature Scott Kennedy from the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He will share his analysis of China’s role in the mineral industry and what effects this may have on many of the world’s largest economies. From steel to specialty minerals, China is an economic powerhouse in supplying many of the most common non-fuel minerals across the globe. This event will be live on Thursday, August 18, on the U.S. Geological Survey's Facebook page.
China’s leadership has made rebalancing the economy away from investment and industry and toward consumption and services, respectively, a top priority. However, their state-centric approach is also creating problems in the domestic and international scenario. Chief among them are slowing economic growth and trade, weak private investment, volatility in the housing market and certain commodities, macro-economic imbalances, and growing debt. The seminar will sketch out China’s reform agenda, the problems that are arising in its implementation and the consequences for the global economy if China continues its current strategies. The seminars allow viewers to remotely watch, access, and interact with presentations making it an interactive session.
