New Canadian tariffs imposed on aluminium windows and doors
Last week, Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on several products manufactured in the United States, including a 10 percent tariff on aluminum doors, door thresholds and windows. These tariffs were issued in response to the tariffs on steel and aluminum imposed by the United States, which were recently expanded to include Canada and Mexico. Canada has stated that these tariffs will remain in effect until the U.S. rescinds its tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
“These actions will only lead to additional price increases in the residential and commercial building markets in both countries, and will hinder progress in the renegotiation of NAFTA and in resolving the softwood lumber dispute,” says Michael O’Brien, CEO, Window and Door Manufacturers Association.
According to the Department of Commerce, aluminum doors, windows, frames and thresholds represented 17.7 percent of window and door exports in 2016. WDMA has been working to seek additional clarification from the Canadian Government regarding how these tariffs will be assessed and collected, and will provide additional guidance when it becomes available.
