The US dollar slid to a three-week low on Tuesday. LME base metals traded mixed on Tuesday and aluminium rose 0.7%.  SHFE base metals also saw mixed performance overnight and aluminium lost 0.2%.

LME aluminium contract fell to US$ 1870 per tonne during the day’s closing yesterday despite the dollar loss; however, it regained some losses during night trading. The three-month LME aluminium rebounded from a session low of US$1,891 per tonne to finish Tuesday 0.7% higher at US$1,917 per tonne. The unwinding of short positions accounted for the majority of Tuesday gains in LME aluminium. LME aluminium is expected to trade at US$1,900-1,920 per today.

SME and SHFE Aluminium Price Trend

The benchmark aluminium price on Shanghai Metal Exchange slightly dropped to US$ 2049 per tonne today from US$ 2051 per tonne on February 26.

The SHFE dominant contract ended its increase for six consecutive trading days as it faced pressure at the 60-day moving average. A buildup of open interests by 5,238 lots transferred the SHFE 1905 contract into the dominant contract yesterday. It dipped to a low of RMB 13,680 per tonne after it increased in early trades, and lost gains accumulated on Monday, to settle at RMB13,690 per tonne. The most active SHFE May aluminium contract hovered around the five-day moving average and closed lower at RMB 13,690 per tonne overnight. It is expected to trade RMB13,650-13,800 per tonne today with spot discounts at RMB 90-50 per tonne against the SHFE 1903 contract. The contract is likely to continue to test pressure at the 60-day moving average.
