EDITED BY : BEETHIKA BISWAS 2MINS READ

The US dollar weakened against a basket of foreign currencies on Wednesday as better-than-expected economic data in China bolstered risk appetite. LME base metals traded mixed on Wednesday. LME aluminium dipped 0.05% and SHFE aluminium advanced 0.5%.

Three-month LME aluminium came off from a week-high of US$1,872.5 per tonne to end marginally lower at US$1,852.5 per tonne on Wednesday. Cash settlement price stood at US$ 1840.50 per tonne at the closing, a slight gain from previous day. LME aluminium has been on a steady downward curve from the beginning of April. With limited support from fundamentals, LME aluminium is expected to trade between US$1,840-1,880 per tonne today.

SME and SHFE Aluminium Price Trend

The benchmark aluminium price on Shanghai Metal Exchange increased to US$ 2096 per tonne today from US$ 2077 per tonne on April 17.

China’s stronger-than-expected economic data for Q1 supported the most-traded SHFE June contract, which climbed to a high of RMB 14,005 per tonne and ended at RMB 13,990 per tonne yesterday. Open interests across all SHFE aluminium contracts grew 38,382 lots with longs accounting for the most. The SHFE June contract then climbed to RMB 14,060 per tonne, a high of this year, before it ended 0.5% higher at RMB 14,030 per tonne overnight. The shutdown of more than 500,000 tpy capacity of Shandong Weiqiao for a capacity swap also supported the market. SHFE aluminium is expected to trade between RMB 13,950-14,100 per tonne  today with spot discounts of up to RMB 40 per tonne.
