Steve James (also published as Richard S. James) is Managing Director of Alfiniti, Inc., steering the company’s aluminium-tubing operations to strong operational and financial results. A veteran of aluminium extrusions, heat-treated sheet and plate, and casthouse processes, he has driven growth and turnarounds across automotive, HVAC, aerospace, and distribution markets worldwide. Known for clear manufacturing plans and accountable teams, Steve focuses on delivering sustained value for customers and stakeholders alike.

AL Circle: Alfiniti has carved out a unique niche in aluminium extruded tubing. How do your proprietary expertise and vertical integration give you a technological or competitive edge in today’s evolving industrial landscape?

Steve James: We spend a lot of time upfront with the customer, understanding their requirements. In many cases, designs are decades old and technology improvements allow cheaper and more robust manufacturing solutions to get the job done. We also offer an extensive range of materials which  allow trade-offs to be evaluated quickly and without trying to force one solution onto a problem.

AL Circle: Can you walk us through some of the most advanced technological processes or innovations deployed at your facilities in the US and Canada, especially those that have redefined precision or performance in aluminium tubing?

Steve James: We have invested in equipment to make much tubing with tighter tolerances than industry standards, whether in extrusion and draw die technology to hold diameters and wall thicknesses to extremely tight tolerances, buying a welded tube line to make very thin wall items when we reached the limits of extrusion and drawing technology, buying and upgrading state of the art straightening equipment to hold runouts at very low levels, or finally , automated inspection cells using emact, laser, and ultrasonic technology that allow us to guarantee these critical features.

AL Circle: In the context of Industry 4.0, how is Alfiniti incorporating automation, data analytics, and smart manufacturing into its production lines—and what impact has that had on productivity, customization, and quality control?

Steve James: We may be old school, but our view is that the basis for using Industry 4.0 successfully must be an understanding of the processes and what parameters are critical to success. We still teach our associates the metallurgy of aluminium and then they spend time understanding the Big 6 Losses concepts and how they apply to everything we do. Only when they have these basic skills do we feel they are ready to start using exploring machine learning for process and data analysis and machining smart programming.

Before that though – from their first day – we encourage curiosity, and the internet has made seeking knowledge easier - and faster - than ever before.  We encourage everyone to learn how others do -or even eliminate their jobs. It has become a powerful tool in benchmarking and especially in sales. The amount of data available publicly is enormous and a good example of something we couldn’t do before was track potential re-shoring opportunities by going BOL’s, HTS code and freight data. Now if I know one customer that is looking to re-shore, I can see who his prior vendors sold to and in minutes have a thoroughly vetted list of potential re-shoring candidates to talk to.

AL Circle: Lightweighting and performance enhancement are key drivers in sectors like automotive, HVAC, and aerospace. How does Alfiniti collaborate with OEMs and engineers to co-develop next-gen tubing solutions tailored for demanding applications?

Steve James: We visit customers, colleges, distributors, and vendors to talk about what aluminium can do, and it never ceases to amaze me that I always learn something new on a visit, a technology, an application, a process, or gaining the acquaintance of an expert in a field. New eyes look at problems, applications, and solutions with a different POV and the best thing we can do is share our perspectives with our customers, vendors, and associates and encourage them to share back.

AL Circle: Sustainability is a growing imperative in the metal manufacturing industry. Could you share your approach to sustainable aluminium sourcing, recycling, and any circular economy initiatives that set Alfiniti apart in terms of environmental responsibility?

Steve James: We view environmental responsibility as a core responsibility, along with our responsibility to all our stakeholders and we use products knowing their recyclability, carbon footprint, and community impact. The first step is knowing the data and there are many companies that can provide help in getting started and develop a scorecard.

AL Circle: With growing global demand and supply chain complexities, what are the biggest challenges Alfiniti faces today—and how are you strategically positioned to scale, innovate, and meet both North American and global market needs?

Steve James: Despite the global challenges we all face, particularly the uncertainty of financing growth and expansion in these times, we view our biggest problem as expanding and training associates to work with us. We are pursuing many avenues from apprenticeship programs to college tuition to expanded daycare to make our company one where people want to come - and stay – to work. 

AL Circle: Looking ahead, what major trends in materials science, extrusion technology, or end-use applications do you foresee shaping the future of aluminium tubing—and how is Alfiniti preparing to lead in that future?

Steve James: The use of automation in extrusion, drawing, and fabrication will change the face of the industry over the next decade. As this happens the Industry 4.0 technologies are going to come into play in a big way.
