Indonesia emerging as a key aluminium beverage can exporter in Asia-Pacific

Thanks to the strong economic growth and a sizeable population, beverage can has great potential in Indonesia. From being primarily a consuming country, Indonesia is now spreading its wings as a key exporter of beverage cans in the Asian market. A yearly growth of 9.05 per cent in aluminium cans export in 2017 demonstrates its potential as an exporter.

In December last year, leading beverage can manufacturer Crown Asia Pacific launched their first plant in Indonesia. It caters to the growing demand of aluminium beverage cans in Indonesia and Asia-Pacific region.

The single-line facility produces 330 ml two-piece aluminium beverage cans and a wide range of specialty cans of varying sizes, and boasts an initial capacity of 650 million cans per year.  The facility can also accommodate a second line of similar capacity and a beverage end production lune. This gives Crown the ability to scale its business based on market demand.

Indonesia’s earnings from aluminium cans export is estimated to reach US$34.2 million in 2017, while value of import is estimated to reach US$19 million. Both export and import volume quantified in tonnes is estimated to decrease marginally in 2018.

The major countries importing aluminium beverage cans from Indonesia include Brunei Darussalam, France, Mauritius, Malaysia, New Caledonia, Nigeria, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Philippines, and UAE.

The major aluminium beverage can exporters to Indonesia are China, Malaysia, Singapore, India, and France.
