Hyundai accelerates electric future with $1.52 billion investment in South Korea

EDITED BY : RUPANKAR MAJUMDER 3MINS READ

The South Korean multinational automotive manufacturer Hyundai Motors is reinforcing its commitment to green transportation by allocating $1.52 billion towards establishing an electric vehicle production facility in Ulsan, South Korea. This strategic move contrasts with the decisions of competitors such as General Motors, Ford, and Honda, who are scaling back certain electric vehicle initiatives due to perceived fluctuation in demand, as a global news agency reports.

The substantial investment by Hyundai appears well-positioned for success, considering the growing traction of electric vehicles in the global market. In 2022, electric vehicles accounted for 10 per cent of new car sales worldwide, marking a significant increase. The New York Times highlights that the market share of electric vehicles has tripled since 2020. Looking ahead, BloombergNEF projects a robust growth trajectory, with electric vehicle sales anticipated to reach nearly 21 million by 2025 and a staggering 80 million by 2050. This investment reflects Hyundai's proactive stance in capitalising on the evolving landscape of the automotive industry towards sustainable and electric mobility.

Hyundai aims to position itself proactively ahead in response to increasing competition, technological advancements, and declining prices. The company plans to commence electric vehicle (EV) production at its new plant by early 2026.

Euisun Chung, the Executive Chair of Hyundai Motors, said, "The new EV-dedicated plant in Ulsan is the beginning of a promising future for the next 50 years and the era of electrification. I am honoured to share our dream of a 100-year company here."

The third-largest automaker globally, including its affiliate Kia, intends to manufacture 200,000 electric vehicles (EVs) annually at a recently established facility. Hyundai's commitment to clean energy extends beyond vehicle production. In May, Hyundai and LG Energy Solutions officials disclosed their collaboration to construct a $4.3 billion battery production plant in Georgia. Upon completion in 2025, this plant is set to facilitate the production of 300,000 EVs each year.

Hyundai isn't the only company investing in electric vehicles. For example, Tesla has six Gigafactories and plans to build more. The automotive industry's shift towards lightweight and electrification has led to a significant surge in the utilization of aluminium. This trend is particularly pronounced in electric vehicles (EVs), which are key in driving this increase. In 2022, a typical battery electric vehicle (BEV) manufactured in Europe contained an average of 283 kg of aluminium, compared to just 169 kg in a traditional petrol or diesel internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle.

The aluminium content in electric vehicles is projected to experience a further substantial growth of 9.5 per cent, reaching an average of 310 kg between 2022 and 2026. This notable expansion is primarily attributed to the widespread use of aluminium in critical components such as e-drive housing, battery pack housings, ballistic battery protection, and cooling plates. As the automotive industry continues to embrace electrification, the demand for aluminium is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing vehicle performance, efficiency, and overall sustainability.
