On March 16th, ASI announced that Elopak ASA a Norwegian Company has been successfully certified against ASI’s Performance Standard with a focus on material stewardship of aluminium. The certification covers Elopak ASA Corporate functions and the coating processes in three European Elopak facilities.

Founded in 1957 by Johan Henrik Andreson and Christian August Johansen, Elopak is one of the pioneers in paper packaging with aluminium lining. From its inception, the goal of the company has been sustainable livelihood thus it has always encouraged the use of recycled products. Elopak ASA with the help of its Technical and Maintenance Engineers can design, install and maintain complete packaging solutions running to the highest operational excellence standards. Elopak produces more than 15 billion beverage cartons every year. They have 10 manufacturing units across the globe. Using paper board, the manufacturing plants, form and distribute beverage cartons to their customers around the world. The cartoons are aseptic in nature and they usually have an aluminium layer inside, to protect liquid and other preserved materials with a longer shelf life.
Achieving the ASI certificate has prepared the company for global validation. The Certification Programme has evolved through an extensive multi-stake holder consultation process and is by far the only voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. ASI Performance Standard certifications have the focus on ‘material stewardship’, addressing issues such as product design, life cycle assessment, management of processed scrap and collection and recycling of products at the end-of-life.
The Third Party independent audits for Elopak ASA were submitted by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd, which is another accredited certification board and risk management provider.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI, said: “We sincerely congratulate Elopak ASA on achieving Performance Standard Certification with Material Stewardship focus at its Norway headquarters and three European production facilities. A life cycle approach is critical to aluminium, particularly for packaging, to support the transition to a circular economy. We look forward to Elopak’s next step for Chain of Custody Certification, to support responsible sourcing.”
Marianne Groven, Director of Sustainability at Elopak ASA, said: “We are delighted to receive our ASI Performance Standard Certification, which underscores our continued commitment to sustainability. The responsible production of materials is vital to Elopak’s ambitions to become even more sustainable, both as a company and through the cartons we produce.”
