The UAE’s largest non-oil industrial enterprise and the top producer of ‘premium aluminium’, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), has recently completed its debottlenecking expansion at its Al Taweelah refinery, which includes the establishment of a third ball mill, further boosting alumina output capacity to 50,000 tonnes per annum.

The entire project, spanning engineering and design through construction and commissioning, was successfully executed by EGA’s in-house team. Within a timeframe of 2.5 years and investing over 650,000 labour hours, EGA has finally achieved this milestone with zero lost time injuries.
In this context, CEO Abdulnasser Bin Kalban has quoted, “It is a key enhancement that allows alumina refinery to recalibrate its bauxite sourcing away from Guinea, while reinforcing future production expansion and operational robustness.”
Situated in the closest vicinity to the smelter in Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), Al Taweelah refinery is the only aluminium facility priced around USD 3.3 billion. This alumina refinery also feeds around half of EGA’s requirements. As a result, it is known for reinforcing raw material security and vertical integration within its value chain.
At present, EGA holds 4 per cent of global aluminium production, which translates into 2.74 million tonnes of cast metal sales as per 2024 statistics. Simultaneously, EGA is adopting proactive steps to expand overseas. It involves pledging USD 4 billion toward a new aluminium smelter in Inola, Oklahoma. Experts believe this will practically double US capacity if it gets materialised in the way as expected. Also, it marks its first new smelting plant there, which they have been working on since 1980.
At the same time, EGA’s Al Taweelah refinery is also expanding its recycling efforts significantly, which is expected to skyrocket its production capability to 170,000 tonnes per annum of billets by 2026.
