Downstream weekly: Chinese aluminium imports overburden Russian shores marking 8.1% increase than last year

This week, the downstream segment has seen increasing activities with Epsilon Group, a Mumbai-based company, acquiring Johnson Matthey's lithium-ion phosphate cathode active material technology centre in Moosburg, Germany. The financial details of this acquisition have not yet been disclosed. Constellium has sold its three soft alloy extrusion facilities in Germany to Vaessen Aluminium for €48.8 million. The sale was completed after receiving regulatory approval. Constellium is a global leader in providing aluminium solutions for various markets, including aerospace, automotive, and packaging. In 2022, they had a whopping revenue of €8.1 billion. Russia has 150,000 surplus shipping containers due to increased Chinese imports, but the outbound movement is sluggish. This causes an imbalance in demand and supply, affecting container logistics. China is the largest consumer and producer of aluminium. Despite facing sanctions, Russia expects trade volume with China to exceed $200 billion this year, up from $185 billion in 2022.

The Australian Anti-dumping Commission has reportedly decided to impose anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties on China-origin aluminium extrusions. The news came on September 22, 2023, when the Australian Commission declared in Notice No. 2023/051 that the Australian Minister of Industry and Science and Technology approved the final recommendations of import duties on China.
