Hindalco is the latest to see stagnant profit growth despite higher metal volumes in the second quarter (Q2). Its Q2 net profit remained flat year-on-year (y-o-y) at Rs 357 crore. While lower other income is a factor for the sequential fall in net profit, lower realisations and higher costs have eroded the firm’s profitability. Also, the company’s copper and aluminium volumes have declined, sequentially, impacting profit growth. In the September quarter, Hindalco’s aluminium sales grew 11 per cent to Rs 2,343 crore thanks to higher volumes of value-added products. However, aluminium earnings before interest and taxes (Ebit) dropped to Rs 166 crore from Rs 170 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The contribution aluminium to earnings has declined to 41 per cent in Q2 from 45 per...

When Bailey began developing a redesign of their products' construction in 2007, the industry had seen few attempts at modernising the standard design. The market was full of conventionally assembled caravans, consisting of sandwich construction timber frame laminated and semi-laminated panels, cloaked in exterior plastic mouldings which were secured together using a combination of adhesives and exterior fastenings. The result, many will argue, was unsurprising. Water ingress was a problem for many, while heat loss through the walls was also an issue. But in 2009, along came the Pegasus touring caravan, becoming Bailey's vanguard in the introduction of the Alu-Tech construction system. With Alu-Tech, Bailey adopted a different approach through the introduction of an interlocking aluminium...

The units have a five year factory warranty. Mounting hardware is included for standard box-delete single rear wheel pickups.

Sapa Extrusions plant manager Ron Ballman says the Delhi aluminum manufacturer is back in full production following a weekend fire that briefly shut down operations in the cast house. The fire occurred about 6:30 p.m. Saturday because of moisture in the molten metal area. A flash fire ignited aluminum oxide and dust in the rafters, but authorities said Richland Parish firefighters quickly extinguished it. "We're fully operational; in fact, we were fully operational in less than 24 hours," Ballman said. There was little damage to the facility and only one minor injury that was treated at the site, he said. "The people in the plant responded very well and follow the processes we have in place," Ballman said. He said a process engineer was on site Monday to investigate the reason for the...

Polish brand Piwo na Miodzie Gryczanymi claims to have broken out of the traditionally glass specialty beer market in Poland, switching to aluminium cans made by Ball Packaging Europe. The alcoholic beverage, made with buckwheat honey, is the first canned beer from Jablonowo Brewery, which celebrates its 21st anniversary this year. Hubert Buksowicz, president and co-owner of Jablonowo Brewery said as a ‘mini barrel’, the can is the best packaging for preserving beer quality. Breaking out of the stereotype “Up to now, specialty beers in Poland have only been sold in glass bottles; why shouldn’t we contradict this stereotype?” he said. The brewery was founded in Jablonowo in 1992 by three partners in a former spinning mill. Initially, it sold low-cost, strong lagers around Jablonowo, but...

Aluminum products maker Service Center Metals Inc. is marking its 10th year in business with an expansion of its plant in Prince George County. The company has started construction on an 80,000-square-foot building adjacent to its plant in the SouthPoint Business Park. Hiring for those jobs, mostly production positions, has started and will continue into early 2014, company co-founder and President Scott Kelley said. The company’s business has recovered from a steep drop in demand during the recession, he said. Kelley co-founded Service Center Metals with Randy Weis and Chip Dollins Jr., who also are executives with the company....

Alcoa Tennessee Operations will break ground Thursday on the expansion of its aluminum rolling mill to accommodate automotive sheet production. Currently, Alcoa is the world's largest producer of rolled aluminum can sheets for beverage cans. Over the next three years, the company expects to invest $275 million in the project to meet the growing demand of the auto manufacturing industry. The expansion is expected to generate 200 new jobs, which will be a mix of technical and trade positions. Automakers are using more aluminum to improve safety, fuel efficiency, durability and overall performance of trucks and cars. Several state lawmakers are set to attend including Gov. Bill Haslam, Sen. Lamar Alexander, and Congressman John Duncan.

Indonesia may lose three-quarters of its power cable makers in the next two to three years as thin margins drive weaker players to accept buyouts, leaving a handful of larger companies to feed the fast-growing economy's electricity demand. Cable industry revenues in Southeast Asia's biggest economy rose to around $2.5 billion last year, up 20 percent from a year earlier but still tiny compared with larger emerging market such as China or India. Indonesia has earmarked $174 billion for infrastructure development over the next 12 years, and about 40 percent of that will go to building power and energy projects in the power-starved archipelago where nearly a quarter of the population lacks basic electricity. But there are more than 20 major Indonesian cable makers battling for a slice of the...

China’s leading power cable producer Jiangnan Group Ltd. reported a 6% decline in its first half profit due to lower copper and aluminium prices. Jiangnan Group’s net profit was 149.4 million yuan ($24.2 million) in the first six months, or 0.049 yuan per share, the company told Hong Kong Stock Exchange today. The Group’s revenues in all its product categories dropped as selling prices declined as a result of decreases in copper and aluminium prices, it said in interim report, adding that recent market difficulties such as a reduction of investment from private sector also contributed to the fall. China’s power cable industry ``faced severe challenges’’ in the first half as the country’s pace of growth was slow and economic structure was under stage of adjustment, Jiangnan Group said. The...

Shandong Nanshan Aluminium Co., a leading fabricator of the lightweight metal, reported a 19.4% decrease in the first half profit due to an enlarging discount of London prices to Shanghai. Shandong Nanshan’s net profit was 313.2 million yuan ($50.8 million) in the first six months or 0.16 yuan per share, the company told Shanghai Stock Exchange today. Aluminium prices on London Metal Exchange had been at a discount to prices on Shanghai Futures Exchange since March, with the differential widened to $310 per tonne by June, Shandong Nanshan said in its interim report. ``Such a big price differential caused much pressure on the company’s export profitability,’’ it said. To cope with uncertainties in regard to Indonesia’s export policies from 2014, Shandong Nanshan has increased imports of...

Customers of CCL Container Inc. in Hermitage know that aluminum prices have tanked worldwide. Not surprisingly, they ask for lower prices when buying aluminum bottles they'll fill with suntan lotion, hair spray, energy drinks and beverages. “They want a price cut. It creates some confusion in the market, really,” said Charlie Herrman, CCL's vice president for sales and marketing. The reality of the aluminum pricing market is complex. The base price for aluminum ingot that Alcoa Inc. and others produce, set by the London Metal Exchange, is about $1,897 per metric ton, down from a 25-year high of about $3,100 in June 2008. But premiums paid in addition to the exchange price are at record highs, analysts say. The premium — based on warehouse inventory levels, time in storage and...

Tesla Motors’ Model S set new records in safety testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) thanks, in part, to the abundance of extruded aluminum used in the vehicle. The Model S scored a 5-star safety rating overall and in every subcategory in which the car was tested. The Model S features an all-aluminum body and makes use of many sophisticated extruded aluminum parts in its chassis, suspension, battery-box and crash management systems. In announcing the results, Tesla noted in particular the vehicle’s performance in NHTSA’s side pole intrusion test, considered to be one of the most severe challenges to structural integrity. The Model S “preserved 63.5% of driver residual space” as result of “nesting multiple deep aluminum extrusions” in the car’s...
