Jaguar has been eyeing the slice of the pie that BMW's 3-Series is squatting over for quite some time (does not sound appetizing) and the time to jump into that market segment is neigh. While I've only experienced the BMW 3-Series briefly, it was a very disappointing 20 minutes, so if Jag can produce a sedan that's 10% as engaging as the F-Type, it will be a home run. The car is going to be built on an all aluminum chassis, and 75% of that material is going to be recycled, which will make this a green car in a way that a lot of hybrids aren't. As far as looks go, we expect it to look like a smaller and sleeker XF (pictured).

There was once a time when man looked to the skies and expected to see giant balloons rather than airplanes drifting above. The Hindenburg Disaster promptly put an end to those dreams. But nearly a century later, one company may have finally figured out how to build a dirigible suitable for the 21st century. Just don't call it a blimp. This fully rigid airship, dubbed the Aeroscraft, differs fundamentally from, say, the Goodyear blimp. Blimps, by definition, have no internal structure and maintain their shapes only through the pressure of the gas they contain; when the gas escapes, they deflate like the gigantic balloons they are. Rigid airships, like zeppelins before them, maintain their shape regardless of gas pressure thanks to an internal skeleton structure—the Hindenburg utilized...

The line between "hazardous" and "non-hazardous" waste is often drawn in a somewhat arbitrary way, sometimes for historical reasons. Occasionally, it is possible to persuade the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to readjust the line. Canadian automotive manufacturers have had one of these rare successes, but mostly because the same waste has already been de-listed in the US. The Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association (CVMA) and Ontario's automobile manufacturers persuaded the MOE to follow the US and to amend Regulation 347 to remove one kind of automotive wastewater sludge produced by the chemical conversion coating of aluminum. Such sludges used to contain cyanide and chromium. According to the MOE, changes in the vehicle manufacturing process "have removed contaminants of concern...

Jaguar is believed to be saddling up for a successor to the XF – Jaguar's rival to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class – built on a scaled-up version of the iq[AI] platform developed for a new 'C/D segment' prestige sedan and the C-X17 SUV concept. What's more, the platform – or 'architecture' as Jaguar's management team prefers to call it – is also likely to yield a 'Sportbrake' version of the small sedan, along with other variants, based on hints dropped by the company's global brand director, Adrian Hallmark. Addressing Aussie journalists at the Frankfurt motor show, the Jaguar exec flatly stated that the sedan wouldn't be the only body style to join the compact prestige passenger car segment, but he would not reveal any further details. The new small sedan won't be the end of...

RHB Research is maintaining its Buy call on Press Metal with a fair value of RM2.77, which is a 30% discount to its fully diluted discounted cashflow valuation. It said on Friday Press Metal’s disposal of its loss-making Hubei smelter did not impact its RM2.77 FV. The FV also implied an undemanding 4.9 times price-to-earnings (P/E) and 0.9 times price-to-book value (P/BV) based on FY14 estimates. RHB Research said Press Metal’s final asset settlement agreement with its China partners ended its Hubei smelter losses, in exchange for a nominal income stream from its extrusion plant. “Although the RM50mil one-off loss is slightly more than its net realisable value, it is likely non-cash in nature and largely priced in. Thus, it has no impact to our RM2.77 FV, which is at a 30% discount to our...

China is experiencing an investment wave in aluminium power cables with overcapacity looming in the sector, a top executive from Shanghai Shenghua Cable Group told Shanghai Metals Market in an interview this week. Such investment wave ``should reduce China’s copper consumption in the long run,’’ Hu Wei, Shenghua’s assistant president, said on Wednesday in the company’s industrial park in Shanghai’s Nanhui district. After having been trialed in China in the past a few years, power cables using all aluminium alloy conductors have gained market recognition and have induced a surge in capacity building around the country, Hu said. For example, Shanghai-listed Baosheng Science and Technology Innovation Co. is calling for bids to construct a 100,000-tpy aluminum alloy conductor plant in Jiangsu...

Structures USA LLC plans to build a $3.3-million steel and aluminum tubular products manufacturing facility in Elizabethtown, Ky., according to the state’s governor. The company, a manufacturing arm of Mars, Pa.-based VSI Sales LLC, will create 50 jobs in the next few years as it looks to supply tubular products to the transportation, light rail, and utility and transmission industries, Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear said in a release Sept. 6. "Manufacturing is such a crucial component for our economic strength and we’re excited that Structures USA has chosen the commonwealth as the location of its new facility," Beshear said in a statement. Structures USA chose Kentucky in part because of the state’s high-quality work force and favorable logistics, he added. The efforts of state and local...

Following several years of solid growth the international aluminium aerosol can industry achieved another production record of 6.93 billion cans in 2012, and prospects for 2013 are also satisfactory. What are the reasons for this striking success and what makes the aluminium aerosol can so unique compared to other competing packaging formats? The answer is not simple but as manifold as the characteristics of the aluminium aerosol can itself. First of all aluminium aerosols are extremely attractive from the marketing point of view. The flexible impact extrusion technology allows the production of full-body-shaped and embossed containers with all kinds of shoulder types. Underpinned by innovative, photo-realistic printing designs the shaping options lead to an utmost shelf impact which...

Elna has expanded and renovated its manufacturing facility, Tanin Elna Co, in Chiang Mai to help boost its production capacity for aluminium electrolytic capacitors. The Chiang Mai facility has been producing electrolytic capacitors since 1980 and began manufacturing electric double-layer capacitors in 2006. Elna's sale of automotive applications has been rising thanks to the increased use of electronics in automobiles. The company expects its sales ratio for automotive applications to reach 75 per cent this year. Other than producing aluminium electrolytic capacitors for automotive applications, Tanin Elna also produces radial type aluminium capacitor for control equipment such as engine, airbag, power steering and engine cooling. About ¥100 million (Bt32.6 million) was spent on the...

Higher Chinese steel prices, particularly for rebar and H-beam, as well as higher semi-finished aluminum prices, drove the monthly Construction MMI up 2.3% for September – but the outlook for the US construction industry in general appears muted. Take, for example, the housing market. Whereas existing home sales grew to their highest level in five years, an economic forecast firm that we follow thinks the underlying data presents a more challenging picture, as the housing affordability index has fallen for the past five months. Most other construction data appear negative. Our friends at Gerdau Market Update, who track a broad range of construction numbers, had this to say in a recent note: “Overall momentum is negative and with three exceptions was negative across all project...

Alcoa Inc.'s battle to get more aluminum into automobiles might be won with a technology developed years ago for soda cans. It's the kind of win that would fit CEO Klaus Kleinfeld's emphasis on more profitable products and being a partner rather than just a supplier to manufacturers. While aluminum prices remain near historical lows and significant profits remain elusive, higher-value products hold more promise, he says. Sherri McCleary, a research scientist at the Alcoa Technical Center in Upper Burrell, said “Alcoa 951,” a pre-treatment coating that makes aluminum stick to other materials, was never widely used for the reason it was created. But a payoff may be at hand as automakers gear up to meet the federal government's 54.5 mpg target by 2025, which is driving use of lighter weight...
