Leading figures from the British automotive industry are set to discuss the growing demand for aluminium amongst carmakers at a special conference in Birmingham this autumn. Until recently, aluminium has only been used in mechanical components in cars, with all-aluminium vehicle bodies such as those now being pioneered by the likes of Jaguar Land Rover consigned to the preserve of high end or specialist vehicles. However, this is now changing as mass-market models begin to utilise the recyclable material in chassis and bodies. The two-day event, which is being organised by the Aluminium Federation (ALFED), takes place on November 11 and 12 at the Thinktank Science Museum in Birmingham. The conference will build on last year’s successful gathering with more than 100 delegates due to attend...

There is increasing scientific evidence that human activity is negatively impacting the environment. The political climate also is changing. ln addition, how companies view environmental issues is emerging as a component of a healthy "bottom line." Slowly, but with ever-increasing momentum, companies are paying heed to their carbon footprint. Companies promoting a "green mindset" are focusing on environmental issues that not only will contribute to better profitability but also enhance the company's positive reputation in the minds of consumers. Therefore sustainability is good business and, if done well, can be profitable. Sustainability is all about reducing the use of natural resources and reducing solid waste and hazardous material from our production processes. Lean manufacturing and...

The blue chip company, which produces 61 billion cans a year and counts Red Bull, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo among its customers, fell 16p to 520½p as Deutsche Bank cut its buy rating to hold. But it warned: “We have concerns about the rising aluminium premium in Europe, which Rexam, currently, is unable to pass through to customers.” Rexam had signalled a potential £20-25million hit this year from higher prices but Deutsche said the impact could be over £30million. Unilever gave investors food for thought as talk resurfaced about spinning-off its food products business. According to UBS, rising interest rates and slowing sales...

General Motors has proposed investing $27 million in its Bedford casting plant for machinery, equipment and tooling needed to produce aluminum engine blocks. The Times-Mail reports the automaker filed a tax abatement request for the investment, saying it would add about 42 jobs and raise the southern Indiana plant's employment to 656. Bedford Economic Development Commission Chairman Patrick Robbins said the tax abatement would save GM 1.9 million in taxes over 10 years. GM plans to install the new equipment beginning in early November and finishing in March 2016. GM announced last December it planned to invest $29 million in the Bedford plant to make parts for six- and 10-speed transmissions.

Smaller cubic capacity and lower fuel consumption while offering the same, if not better, performance – that is the recipe for success when it comes to downsizing. A modern turbocharged system is necessary to achieve this. The global development trend toward turbocharging for gasoline engines is in full swing. International automotive supplier Continental is supporting this trend and setting milestones with its pioneering and innovative turbocharger technology. The first Continental turbocharger went into series production in a highly efficient, multi-award-winning 1.0l engine in 2011. The company is now adding another chapter to this success story with a technological world premiere: Continental's powertrain developers have launched series production of the first car turbocharger with an...

Toyota Motor Corp. will dramatically expand the use of aluminum body panels and structures in its 2018 Camry, a major step in a global shift toward increased aluminum usage in cars and trucks. Sources familiar with the matter told AMM that Toyota has already launched an aluminum-intensive design program for the Camry and is actively looking to establish automotive aluminum infrastructure in North America. "The program is going to support the Camry which launches in 2018," one source said. "It is more than just increased utilization – it’s an aluminum-intense design, similar to that of the Ford (Motor Co.) F-150." Aluminum sheet is used for the hood and roof on current Camry models, the source said, but starting in 2018 a large majority of the body panels, including the doors and trunk,...

According to the new chief of Japan’s aluminum industry body, if other carmakers follow in Ford’s footsteps and release models made from the lightweight metal, its price could rise by as much as a third to $2,500 per tonne. While the metal has already seen niche usage in high-end automotive products, the decision to employ it within the construction of a mainstream model like Ford’s F-150 pickup could trigger a revolution in its rival’s next models. Aluminum, which is lighter than steel, doesn’t rust and allows the carmaker to develop a more efficient car – is now mulled by several automakers, which are rumored to use it for their future products. Certainly, before any decisions are made, many are still waiting to see if Ford’s daring move will prove successful, as the automaker’s F-150...

While models that widely use the lightweight metal into their construction already exist, it’s the high visibility Ford F-150 that puts it mainstream, and others are expected to swiftly follow. Steel has been for many decades the go to material for the worldwide auto industry, even as aluminum was heralded by automakers as the next big thing because of its ability to make new cars lighter and thus increase fuel efficiency. Still, big obstacles were involved – cost and the complete overhaul of manufacturing technology that was needed among them – so its prime users remained the niche luxury automakers. Now, Ford is ready to put more than 700,000 2015 F-150’s annually on the roads, as it mulls increased fuel efficiency and the fact that research showed them 80% of buyers would go for the...
