Utah brewery switches from glass to aluminum

In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, a Utah brewery is putting its brews in aluminum cans rather than traditional glass bottles. Park City Brewery in Park City is making the switch, despite having been in business for only a little more than three months. Co-founder and sales manager Hud Knight claims the decision was made in part due to the company's nascent success. "We're in Maxwell's where we launched our beer, Jupiter Bowl, the Boneyard, the Cabin on Main, Glenwild Country Club," Knight said. The other reason for the switch is the brewery's dedication to the environment. One reason for its success is its brand marketing that puts an emphasis on environmental issues. The brewery is so devoted, in fact, that its slogan is "Preserve Nature's Playground" -- a slogan that is...

Two Voith SafeSet Couplings to be installed at Novelis facility in Oswego, New York

Two Voith SafeSet Couplings are scheduled for installation at Novelis's recently-expanded Oswego, New York facility later in 2015. The couplings will be applied with a 120 inch wide aluminum hot strip reversing roughing mill powered by two 4000HP motors that produces rolled aluminum products. The SafeSets, optimized through extensive testing by Voith, are to be integrated with the center sections of existing slipper spindles. They are engineered for possible future application with Voith Universal Joint Shafts. Novelis's Oswego manufacturing plant recently expanded via the addition of a $200 million hot finishing rolling mill to produce five times more aluminum for an increase of 200,000 mt/year. The expansion created the need for more reliable and productive technology, generating...

Top steelmaker fights for autos as Ford turns to aluminum

When the Ford Motor Co. confirmed last year it would build its most popular pickup truck using aluminum, the automaker's steel supplier was caught flat-footed. Now, ArcelorMittal, the top worldwide supplier of steel for automobiles, has built a two-pronged response to try to head off defections by other customers including General Motors Co., Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Japan's biggest carmakers. First, the Luxembourg-based company developed lighter steel that's as strong as earlier products. Second, it embedded almost three-dozen engineers with car companies around the world so there are fewer surprises on vehicle redesigns, according to Brian Aranha, head of ArcelorMittal's automotive business. "We see the threat," said Aranha, whose unit is ArcelorMittal's most profitable, in an...

Utilization rate at China A356 aluminum alloy producers fall in May

Utilization rate at 15 Chinese A356 aluminum alloy producers dropped slightly to 61.14% in May, Shanghai Metals Market survey finds. The small decline in production, however, leaves the market still in slight surplus, SMM aluminum group says, which kept processing fees for A356 aluminum alloy in check. Consumption in domestic market is expected to be restricted by limited growth expectation towards China’s automobile production and sales this year, SMM adds.

Chinese exports of aluminium 'semis' to drop as global prices fall

Chinese exports of semi-finished aluminium products are likely to drop in coming months as prices in the international market fall, industry sources and traders said. Exports of the semis, including profiles and plates, have been blamed as a factor for lower global premiums on primary aluminium. Lower availability could stop the premium from falling further, traders said. "Semis exports would fall later because LME aluminium prices have fallen," said a trader at a Chinese state-owned primary aluminium producer that also makes plates and exports the product. He added that exports in May had still been strong because those shipments had been booked a month or two before delivery. A trader at a Western producer of aluminium semis said overseas buyers would not buy more Chinese products...

EU regulators to decide by July 20 on Ball's $6.9 bln Rexam bid

European Union market competition regulators are set to decide by July 20 whether to approve the 4.4 billion-pound ($6.9 billion) merger deal between Ball Corp and Rexam Plc, the world's two largest makers of drinks cans. The companies sought approval for the deal on Tuesday, according to a filing on the European Commission website. The European Commission can clear the merger unconditionally in the preliminary review or extend the deadline to consider concessions offered to allay competition concerns. It can also open a full-scale investigation to examine deeper worries. Rexam Chief Executive Graham Chipchase has dismissed any significant regulatory problems but analysts said the size of the combined company could force regulators to demand concessions such as asset sales in return for...

New chief dust extractor makes repairing aluminum less explosive

Chief Automotive Technologies introduces a dust extractor that collects and contains the harmful aluminum particles released when aluminum vehicle body panels are sanded. The dust extractor features all-stainless steel construction and high-efficiency immersion separation technology, which make it an ideal solution for modern collision repair facilities. Aluminum is increasingly being used in vehicle bodies to save weight. When sanded, it produces dust that can corrode any bare steel it contacts. Aluminum dust is also explosive if a spark is present to ignite it. Therefore, collision repair facilities should isolate aluminum jobs from steel repair, and collect aluminum dust at its source as it's generated. "A dust extractor ensures that no metal particles become airborne and travel...

European Aluminium warns of Chinese imports growth

Chinese exports of aluminium products to Europe have increased by almost 30% since the beginning of 2015, posing an unprecedented threat to the European aluminium industry. The latest trade data shows rapid growth in Chinese exports to Europe in the first four months of 2015 compared to the same period in 2014. In most market segments, the growth of these exports to Europe is two to three times bigger than the growth of Chinese exports to the rest of the world. At this rate, the volume of Europe’s imports of Chinese aluminium will exceed the forecasted 2 to 3 percent growth of European aluminium markets in 2015. Chinese exports are supported by a set of measures covering primary to downstream aluminium products while Chinese industry continues being heavily backed by state and provincial...
