According to the data released in a recently published market research report, the Global Aluminium Extrusion Market will grow at a CAGR of 6.71 per cent during the period 2016-2020. Growing construction market has been identified as the sole growth driver for the sector. Aluminium extrusion is a method in which aluminium alloy billets are heated to 800-925 F and subject to the extrusion process. Extruded aluminium includes mill finished, anodized, and powder-coated aluminium. Aluminium extrusions are used in many sectors, such as the construction, transportation, electrical, machinery, and consumer durables, due to their high strength, flexibility, and durability. Aluminium extrusion products are 100% recyclable and do not emit hazardous gases during processing. This helps manufacturers...

India's state-owned aluminium maker National Aluminium Company (Nalco) and the Defence Ministry's Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd (MIDHANI) are in talks to set up an aluminium-lithium alloy plant. Lithium is the hottest metal today, with its demand underlined by the Space X and Tesla ventures of maverick entrepreneur Elon Musk. Lithium-aluminium alloys meet the extremely strong but very light properties required for spacecraft and high-performance Tesla batteries. The tanks of freezing liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen attached to NASA's space shuttles are made of such alloys. "Lithium-aluminium alloy is an extremely expensive alloy (sells for around INR 40 lakh a tonne)," Nalco Chairman Tapan Kumar Chand told ET. "More importantly, it is critical to our strategic sectors. Indian government is considering to impose an anti-dumping duty or a safeguard duty on aluminium products . The Indian aluminium industry has been lobbying to the commerce ministry for benefits similar to those imposed for the steel industry in the country to check cheap imports in the sector. The Aluminium industry approached commerce ministry after the finance ministry decided against the safeguard duty. Safeguard duty is a WTO-compatible temporary fiscal measure to protect a country’s domestic industry from cheap imports. China and West Asia are dumping aluminium – China as its industry is heavily subsidised and West Asia as power is very cheap there. Electricity accounts for almost 40 per cent of the total production cost.

Scientists at the United States Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Eck Industries announced last week that they have developed a new variety of aluminium alloys that are more resistant to heat and are easier to work with than current alloys. Such alloys have the potential to re-invigorate America’s production of rare-earth elements, which are key to electronics and other modern and emerging technologies. “We have these rare earths that we need for energy technologies,” said ORNL’s Orlando Rios, “but when you go to extract rare earths, the majority [of rare earths found in the United States] is cerium and lanthanum, which have limited large-volume uses.” To address this problem, the research team has developed an...

Customs data showed China exported 400,000 mt of unwrought aluminium and aluminium semis in April, down 20,000 mt MoM and 7 per cent YoY. YTD exports through April totaled 1.48 million mt, down 10.0 per cent YoY. Rising SHFE/LME aluminium price ratio cut export profit, leading to declines in export volumes. But the decline was limited, due to two reasons. First, some exporters were still willing to take export orders so as to maintain customer relationship. Second, yuan’s exchange rate against the US dollar still brought profit for exporters.
